Messis in my top 3 regardless if he wins or not.

WC 2002: Final
WC 2006: Semifinal
EC 2008: Final
WC 2010: Semifinal
EC 2012: Semifinal
WC 2014: ?

We Germans clearly had a long warm-up, it is time to bring it home.

On a more serious note: I do think that this match will be decided in the midfield. Nothing I saw yesterday, would make me afraid. While Mascherano is an outstanding player, the midfield is clearly separated. Neither the Dutch, nor Belgium, nor Switzerland, had the player material to take advantage. Germany will certainly trying to exploit that space, as they did it with Brazil's left side. Lahm will eventually overload the midfield as a fullback.

On the other hand Argentina has clearly problems at breaking down packed defenses and Germany shows that they are packed since Lahm switched to the right side and they do not have the ridiculous high line anymore.

I especially like the midfield and fullback match ups, which should give Germany an advantage.

Still this is a WC game and it can go in both directions.

I have Germany down to win and now that my Netherlands are out I can come clean and state that I have had Germany to win regardless (I thought it might be a Germany Netherlands final after we routed Spain).

I will be rooting for my ex-neighbours.

Will be rooting for Germany. They have such a good team and they played the best at the WC. Especially against Portugal and Brazil of course.

They deserve to win it.

One guy is going to get a king size monkey off his back, either Löw or Messi. That being said...

Also, conversation between these guys is gonna be kinda awkward

For betting and Greek reasons I want Argentina to win. Also, Messi winning his World Cup would be great to already solidify his legacy before he even reaches 30.

With that said, Germany has so many weapons I just don't see Argentina being able to shut the Germans out.

Messi cant even tie Maradona's shoes.

He dissapeared in all 2nd round, against Belgium and Netherlands he was not a factor, and against Switzerland he also didnt do much.
Maradona won a world cup just by himself and played the best at the important games.

Maradona made Napoli the best team of Italy, Messi hasnt won anything without a superteam around him.

He already won everything at club level, so if he wins on the big stage with Argentina too that gets him up into the GOAT candidate talk, specially considering Di Maria is out and Aguero is hurt.

*sigh* if he wins that cements him as one of the top 3 argentinians of all time alongside Maradona and di Stefano, but it doesn't move him past Pele, Cruyff, Netzer, Platini, Beckenbauer, Gerd, Phenomeno, van Basten, Zizou, phenomeno, garrincha, romaria, etc.

In what world would Romario or Netzer be above Messi with a WC?

I think you're just backing older players because they're older.

In a world were we don't judge only on their stat sheet? Messi's numerical dominance is impressive and what puts him in that tier of players who are all deserving of one of the finally spots in the top 10, but I don't think it prudent to ignore how much messi's statistical dominance is shaped by how the game has changed both in terms of keeping players fit to perform consistently, and how league play has changed since the big clubs got even bigger after the bosman ruling.

I wouldn't have romario over messi, but I know some do so I included him, netzer for me is top 5 all time though, he's the most brilliant midfield maestro I've ever seen a combination of xavi and pirlo but at an even higher level. I've still not enjoyed watching a footballer like I do Netzer.

This feels like an anticlimax for some reason.

Don't feel like either of these teams are really worthy WC finalists.

Predicted Germany over Argentina at the start. Also predicted Spain over Netherlands back in 2010. Call me the World Cup Nostrodamus.

Going with Germany 2-1.

These are two of the best teams on paper. The only team that might've looked better on paper is Spain, and they certainly didn't deserve to be here.

Same here except I predicted Argentina over Germany this year. You look more likely to be the true WC Nostradamus but we will see on Sunday...

It's always great to see people argue about sports GOATs when you know 90% of these people haven't even seen half of the players they're talking about.
