The french player's elbow barely made contact with Di Maria, who them sold it and got what he wanted.
Argentina's players quickly put the ball on the spot to kick and put pressure on the ref, surrounding him, who then lacked the fortitude and calm to stop the situation and call for the VAR validation.
Just a disgrace, IMO.
Well the players are making any contact very obvious, I will say that. Another Argentinian player went down in pain on France's free kick after barely getting touched. That was worse and ref didn't fall for it.
In the PK case, O player gets benefit of space to play in. Have to be obvious of going for ball first and foremost in the box in particular.
Not saying you don't have a point, just that gamesmanship is a part of the huge stakes and I could see argument against the PK even if ultimately I see why it was called.
