Villa captain Petrov diagnosed with leukaemia

Aston Villa have announced that captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

The 32-year-old midfielder went for tests after developing a fever following Saturday's Barclays Premier League match against Arsenal.

"The Villa Board received news today that our long-standing captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with acute leukaemia," read an Aston Villa statement on the club's official website.

"Stiliyan developed a fever following the Arsenal game last Saturday and subsequently underwent tests conducted by Dr Ian McGuinness.

"Haematology experts confirmed the diagnosis today [Friday].

"We expect to learn more about Stiliyan's situation in due course and we have moved quickly to support him and his family.

"During this time we ask that Stiliyan's privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries and trust that we will share information as we receive it.

"Stiliyan is cherished by many and he will get from Villa every ounce of love and support that we have to help bring this to a positive conclusion."

Villa boss Alex McLeish said on Friday: "He's on a train right now to go and get more tests, after the viral condition last week when he had a temperature.

Damn you don't expect to come down with a fever and discover its leukemia. One of my favorite players from the mid table sides and hope he gets well.

**** depressing. Liverpool have sucked all the life out of me this year. Don't even care if they do the domestic cup double. How are we worse than a team when we supposedly bought their best players? FML

Actually thought Carroll slipped there. Even he would not dive with the goal mouth open at his mercy. Its still funny though.

Felt kind of bad for Liverpool today. Simpson should have been red carded and they should have had a penalty. The second Cisse goal was offside by a mile, and Reina didn't look like he actually touched Perch. His dive was as bad as Carrolls, imo. When it rains it pours though, as it did for us at the start of the year.

Okay, maybe he made contact, but there was no real force there. The reaction was ridiculous, and clearly a dive. He tried to get Reina sent off period.

Of course he did. But the keeper was an idiot for head butting him and deserved to be sent off, regardless of the dudes reaction.

I could go either way on sending him off, contact was minimal. It was stupid, but far worse tackles, with actual intent to injure, get off with a yellow, or nothing at all. Perch deserves punishment for his simulation though. He was yellow carded for tripping Reina, and deserved another for simulation.

Guess its worth mentioning Valencia as a top 10 player now. If Jonny Evans hadn't played the entire season, he'd be our player of the season and premier league player of the year.

As good as Valencia's been, I still think RVP would have won the award anyway.

2 x Barca, Tottenham and Arsenal in 9 days. Could very easily be 4 straight losses and another trophyless season

The far worse argument is pointless. It was head to head. It's a sending off.
