I think it'll be terrible for the morale of Ekitike anyways, unless he flat-out beats Isak for the spot but then it'd appear an unnecessary burning of funds, likely another English record fee.

You just can't reliably play both and accommodate Wirtz and Salah alongside Frimpong & it's poor dynamics for players that have all joined to start in all of the important matches.

Curious to see how Slot manages that though, and all of the personalities.

From Slot himself:

Based on Newcastle United's response to Isak's public statement, I am leaning towards a January exit to Liverpool -- similar to the van Dijk saga.

Newcastle really seem to have torpedoed this summer in dramatic fashion.

Without another attacker, it's going to be a tough ask for Liverpool to repeat as PL champions. There's just not enough depth to go a full season along with cup and CL games, not to mention Salah will leave for AFCON. One injury to either Ekitike or Gakpo...

Obviously, if Newcastle were able to bring in a replacement, Isak may still be sold this week. However, we continue to see rejection after rejection:

Folks, I think we need to have a little chat about Konate. His form has dropped massively since last season.

It's not unheard of for him to have stretches where he looks dross. The team's adjusting to a new system and new roles and we haven't had our strongest 11 yet. Let's see how he adapts.

How about the shift Dom put in at RB? I don't care where he plays I want him on the pitch.

The issue with "just give him time" is he's into the last year of his contract. If Konate's head has been turned, or he doesn't wish to sign a new contract, it's time to move him on. Guehi is the key, though. If Liverpool and Crystal Palace are unable to meet on a fee, Konate will be staying regardless.

I'd rather he play this season and walk on a free than squeeze a few pennies out of Madrid or PSG and hope Guehi slots in seamlessly and plays 50 games. It's not like we're far removed from Ibou and Virg being one of the best defensive pairings in Europe.

One could argue this transfer is needed more than Isak:

I think Konate is mentally in Madrid now. I'm really annoyed with how Madrid are operating these days....getting to a player with 1 year left, and having them agree to come for a free the following season. I've heard recently that Madrid might be moving on to someone else, but I think the damage has been done.

A Youtuber I listen to brought up a good point: Liverpool want Konate, and Konate "says" he's happy at Anfield, so then why haven't they agreed on a number at this point?? It doesn't make sense. Someone is lying here, and I think we know who it is. After all...we dealt with this last year.

I think Konate is checked out....and no amount of 'professionalism' can completely make that up.

I'd really like to see us sign Guehi here.....make it the priority over Isak (imo) and then just start him, and leave Konate on the bench for the year. He can leave next summer. I'm over this.....and I think teams need to start making a stand against what Madrid are doing.

I'm sure this comes across a little rich for Newcastle fans right now, coming from Liverpool.....but hey, we offered you either the Prem record payout for Isak, or something about 4-5 mil short of it. We didn't wreck his head and hope to get him for free next year. I think we're way overpaying for Isak, so IMO it's a completely different ball of wax.

And let this be a warning all: If Madrid continue to get away with this....your gonna see Barca and PSG start doing this as well....then comes the Man $itty's and Liverpools, and Bayern...and so on. This will show up on your doorstep too, eventually. Getting $120mil or whatever for Isak may not put a smile on your face....but at least that's the name of the game. I was pissed losing Coutinhio a few years back, but at least the $130-mil or whatever allowed us to get Allison and VVD. Turned out to be a great bit of business for us.

So yeah...Konate needs to sign a deal and commit, or we need to Get Guehi (should get him anyhow) and just stick Konate on the bench for the year, and let him walk with zero fanfare. If Madrid want Konate....then pay for him. What TAA and Madrid pulled off was shameful. Nice work for Madrid, but shameful from TAA. I hope he gets booed for the rest of his life in Liverpool.

Now that we know the game here....just leave Konate on the bench.

Take a bow, Szoboszlai. Klopp would have given his "BOOM" remark in his post-match interview.

Defense was superb today. Credit to both Kerkez and Konate for bouncing back.

Yes, the defense stood tall today. I'll tip my hat to Konate. I think Arsenal made a point to go at Kerkez, and see if he was up to it. He had a great game IMO.....but I will concede that a few of his "great plays" were recoveries for some bad spacing, or misreading moments earlier. But hey...that's football for ya. I'm just glad he recovered, and was able to prove he belonged out there against one of the best teams in the sport. This was a great defensive statement game today.

Offense needs to start firing. Arsenal are great defensively, and we're early going...so no panic. But I've got a few questions as to whether or not this offensive unit can turn into a juggernaut. I'm hoping it clicks....and can't wait to watch if/when it does.

At any rate....this was a great win today. What a kick!

Wirtz kills a lot of attacks with his indecision or by trying to do to much, though he had a few nice moments. He'll learn he can't dribble three players in England.

That's just it, we haven't yet. We spoke earlier about how it would take a few games, at the very least, considering the incomings and outgoings.

And, as of today, still managed to take nine out of nine points, only club to do so.

I remember when the Newcastle journalists said Isak would not be sold this summer... then they said he would cost £150m... then they said they would first bring in two forwards (replacement for Isak and another for Wilson) before selling...
