Post#801 » by HKPackFan » Tue Jun 17, 2014 4:23 am

I woke up at 5AM to watch this game and headed to a bar to watch with some fellow Americans. Although there was a small but loud Ghana contingent, hats off to them.

I thought it was a fantastic, dramatic game. Couldn't believe that initial goal, right off the bat, people were still getting their coffee and rubbing the sleep out of their eyes. Amazing.

But well fought by Ghana, we were on our heels the rest of the game, and the second half was terribly frustrating, it seemed like we could barely string 2 consecutive passes together. I was disappointed in the tying goal, but you could tell it was coming as Ghana had all the momentum and was attacking again and again.

The final goal was a shock, really a shock. My buddy had told me USA is quite dangerous on set plays, especially corner kicks, well he turned out to be correct. We didn't get a lot of chances, but we sure made them count. Very proud the team made it through even though they were dominated in the second half.

I think most people realized this was a make or break game for either team. A loss was most likely going to be a quick exit.

I think this sets us up well for Portugal. Looks like both teams have injuries to deal with and that makes it for a less predictable game.

I think Germany stomps Ghana and if we can draw with a (not full strength) Portugal and draw a resting Germany, we get in with 5 points. That's my hopeful scenario. Although we aren't going to be able to get away with getting dominated for most of the 2nd half like today against Portugal.

But without looking too far ahead, I'd rather celebrate today! Go USA!!! YAY!!!

Dude you have no clue what you are talking about. Not even %1.

Behrami was born in Kosovo. They moved to Switzerland when he was 13 years old.
Djourou was born in Cote d'Ivoire.
Shaqiri was born in Kosovo.
Rodriguez was born in Barcelona.
Seferovic was born in Bosnia.
Mehmedi was born in Macedonia.

They weren't born in Switzerland yet they are playing for Switzerland.

You may not care but a lot of people care in all over the world. There are Germans who don't accept Mesut, there are Turks who didn't accept Marco Aurelio, there are Spanish who don't accept Diego Costa. Get your facts right. It seems you started watching football since world cup started.

Jonathan De Guzman playing for Netherlands cracks me up. Flip side is that we have a world great in Bale playing for a country that will likely never make a WC during his career.

I really hope so. It's not fair for Ramsey, Joe Allen or Bale that they need to rely on **** Vokes and Hennessey. Sounds like a **** cocktail you order for the same price as a tecate...

age players moved to switzerland

Shaqiri- 1
djouou- 17 months
behrami- 5
Rodriguez- Born in zurich
Seferovic- born in sursee, switzerland
mehmedi- 2

they all learned their football in switzerland and we're raised there from an early age or were born there. There is not a big deal. Mesut was born and raised in germany and learned his football there , if there are germans that don't accept him then shame on them. I understand Diego costa and Aurelio cases though. But hey it's just football at the end of the day , if they want to play there and the nation wants to call them up.. so be it.

Racists everywhere.

Switzerland gave shelter to these people when they were really young and running from political instabilities (a.k.a. war) in Yugoslavia, others like Rodriguez and Seferovic were actually born in Switzerland. The non-acceptance of Mesut is pure racism towards Turkish people in Europe in general, Mesut is German-Turkish. Diego Costa was selected by Felipão and didn't accept the call up, saying that his football is more Spanish than Brazilian.

You see? This is not about money or status or just to play for a national team. There's affinities, identities and belonging. If someone has the nation rights to and the Nation wants to call up, it should be up to him. To call someone like Ozil who spent all his life at Germany, not German, is pure racism. Thesame people annoyed by the fact that Ozil is playing for Germany, is the same people who mocked him at school for not having German ascendence - the racists.

I saw you calling Meireles racist like Fenerbahçe, but you're racist as ****.

What makes me more shocked is the fact that here in Brazil, TV is repeating this speech "A is playing from France but is Algerian". Man, Brazil. I'm Brazilian and I'm not a south american native indian, a Tupi-Guaraní. I have Italian, German, African and Portuguese descendance at the same time even though I don't have citizenship. I feel offended by that.

They do merge for the Olympics - there's an age limit, but Bale could have played. He declined with a minor injury unfortunately.

England might actually be a really good side with Bale and Ramsey, and might have won something in the past with Giggs too. I guess it's just fantasy talk though.

Does it really matter what age they moved there? To me, not really. Those players were raised by their parents with the culture of another country. For example, I bet, Shaqiri couldn't speak french until he started going to the school. Seferovic's native language is Bosnian. He was raised with Bosnian culture even though they lived in Switzerland.

Obviously, they can choose to play whoever they want. I am just saying my personal opinion. I don't like it. I lke the way Brazil National Team. Everyone is Brazilian if not any exception. Argentina is the same. Italy is the same. Maybe I am a bit patriotic guy but if it is called national team, I don't want a guy in my team with raised by different culture, language or whatever.

bbms, you are on the ignore list and your message has been reported. You are talking out of your stomach. Don't even know what you are saying, Mesut Ozil always stated that he is more Turkish than German. He speaks Turkish pretty good, he couldn't even speak German until he started the school. his family raised him in a Turkish culture and traditions. So learn a bit then I might think about moving you out of my ignore list.

You're right about the fact that he also feels Turkish, but he decided to play fot the German NT. He wasn't forced to do so. He said in an interview "I am third generation in Germany: my father grew up here. Turkey will always be a special country for me but I did not doubt my decision to play for Germany – ever. I started to play for Germany in the youth teams "
Looks like he also feels German a bit.
