Why Do Arrogant Americans Use this Excuse to Thrash Soccer?

I talked to someone before. He says he does not watch soccer because it is boring. He says they are always on the floor, too many fouls, it is too girly...

Then he says it is a hour and a half of boredom

I came across many people who said the same thing.

Most of them are football fanatics. Do they know that the NFL there is really only about 11 minutes of action in games?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 61406.html

How can they say soccer is too slow paced compared to the NFL (NFL has penalties flags so many times in a game now, 1 minutes between each play, injuries, it is worse than soccer if you ask me).

I like all sports and I see the beauty in all of them. It just drives me crazy when people hold so much pride for their favorite sport (NFL in particular) as if it a competition amongst other sports.

What is the deal? Why? Why can they not just say I do not feel like making the time to watch soccer? But they rather listen to Mike & Mike in the morning rambling on about football in the Spring, even though no games are being played in the Spring, when they could actually make their time more useful and watch a soccer game.

They do not realize the US can win World Champions in basketball and baseball. It means something, but if they were to win the World Cup....

The reasons they use to hate on soccer are dumb. They say they want more scoring, yet they like baseball, golf and hockey. Hell, even football is high scoring because every touchdown is worth 6 points. The truth is they hate soccer because the U.S hasn't been good at it. If the U.S were contenders for 2 world cups in a row, you would see a huge growth on the fan base. Hell, just look at what happened with the ladies a decade ago. Cycling is another example, no one cared prior to or after Lance Armstrong. It doesn't help that MLS is not a big league either.

I think it's got more to do with the level of their professional league than the quality of their national team. Unlike all their major sports, MLS isn't even close to being the best in the world.

I have a feeling that Americans appreciate physicality and athleticism more than natural skill and art in a sport, which is why they will never appreciate something as intricate as soccer.

so someone not liking the same sport as you makes them arrogant?

in that vain, why do arrogant europeans assume that americans are inferior because most of us prefer american football to soccer?

see how dumb that sounds?

^^They may not like it, but they mock the sport every chance they got. At least the sports media does. That does make that group of people a bit arrogant.

No the reasons used make them arrogant. Too girly, boring, long etc., yet they never watched a game.

Like J-Mezzy said, they mock it.

Except the reasons that they use are completely true for describing the American leagues...MLS and USL...

MLS soccer is getting better each and every year. The quality of players all around the league have improved so much to this point that European loans in the off season are becoming very common.

The average attendance for MLS soccer last season also surpassed the NHL and NBA so it's growing big time in the United States. MLS soccer can be found on Fox, NBC and ESPN, by the next World Cup soccer in America will be just a big and just as accepted as all the other major leagues in North America. I also predict it will be a top 10 league in the next 10 years.

Threads like this won't exist in the future as the average American will soon love international and MLS soccer.

Its just ignorance.

I have lived in both sides of the pond.

In north america it is Soccer they ridicule.
Here its american football and baseball (as they try and compare it to Rugby and cricket).

^^Yes, arrogance works both ways. Another example is NASCAR vs Formula 1.

BTW, I find it a bit sad that soccer is the only team sport in which 0-0 is a perfectly normal result. In hockey and rugby, it can happen - but is highly unlikely. In baseball or the NFL, there is always a winner, and no way a cricket, basketball or handball match ends 0-0.

You can actually play a 5 day test match in cricket and then end up in a draw too. I think that's more frustrating than a 0-0 draw after a 90 min football game.

i just got into soccer during the last world cup and draws used to bug me. they don't anymore and i think they're fine only because of the way a league table works. when the points from each game are added up and that decides the champion, they're fine.

i think that when the record decides playoff seeding, draws are ridiculously stupid.

growing up in the american culture i grew up with the NBA and NFL of course

but now I'm older and realize how much of a joke the NFL is.
Futbol is the real deal. they don't take breaks like the NBA and NFL
calling timeouts every single play. you just hit and tackle..
Futbol is beautiful although they say its boring, yea sure some games are boring
but NFL is boring aswell. you have your games of boredem like all sports.

Futbol > NFL + NBA

I love the sport, but American Football is a great game to, and the NFL is the best run sports league in the world. I do find it funny when people **** on american football but love the other one or vice versa because tactically the way the games play out actually have a lot in common. Even if they way they get there is radically different. Then again those are my two favorite sports so I guess it's only reasonable I see connections between the two sports that others don't.

Soccer apart from exaggerated injuries and time wasting late in games is so much more fluid and thus enjoyable to watch.

I have tried watching NFL but the amount of breaks during the game was too much to take for me.

Like watching NHL (although I hardly have the time to do so) and NBA. But the other American sports aren't mine.

I hope I covered every angle here

- Yes lack of quality league (MLS) and the time zone difference is a major issue

- Americans have accepted commercials/advertising as a staple in their culture. So commercials every 5-10 minutes is a way of life

- Scoring is a big issue. In case you haven't noticed, each American sport (NHL included) has altered rules to increase scoring. The only thing Soccer will do is goal line technology but the increase in goals will not be noticeable.

- Ignorance. Most Americans don't care or acknowledge life outside USA borders. So having to know, watch and follow foreign players overseas is a big No No. The mindset is that if they are worthwhile, they play on American soil.

- USA is an upper body society. If you've been overseas, you realize how people have different body structure. Europeans are slimmer with strong legs while Americans have big upper bodies with little or fat legs. Considering most Americans spend their life in a car versus walking, it's no surprise they don't put much interest in cardio and sports that involve cardio. NBA is the only American sport that involves cardio and yet players are substituted every 8 or so minutes of action.
