He signed that contract a couple years ago and everyone knew he would stay on for the next WC.

Also, his tactics during the tournament were spot on.
That 3-5-2 against Italy and 4-3-3 against France were good choices and he can't do much about Schweinsteiger's brain fart against France, which cost us the game.
I mean, there wasn't enough fire power on offense(and Müller wasn't good during the tournament, but that's something you could see coming with his form during all of 2016) but that game normally goes to a penalty shootout, with the only chance of goals scored being individual mistakes. And this time around, we made them.

The only thing you could say is that he could/should've taken one more offensive player like Brandt or even Hahn(instead of 6 CM's), while finally cutting mascot Poldi as well.
But that still doesn't guarantee you anything more on offense.

BTW: Schweinsteiger said he doesn't know if he'll keep playing for the team(I think he had a great run but he's done and that would be the best thing for everyone involved) but good 'ol Poldi stated that he wants to stick around.
So that means another tournament with Poldi taking a spot of a guy more deserving and actually able to help the team on the pitch.

Against France? Really?
It was an absolutely piss poor choice to play Özil on the right wing. He's just not the player who will break down the opposing FB.

You have a 35 y/o LB (Evra) playing for France? How the hell do you not come up with the idea to go to the base line? I guarantee you....if you go for someone with speed like Sane or Müller and you'll break down the French defense multiple times.
Instead, he went with Özil...who went into the middle all the time. French team obviously had no problem defending this with 3-4 defenders always close to Özil or Kroos in the middle.

The team needs somebody with new ideas imo. Although, you have to say that the number of capable available managers is currently restricted to an absolute minimum it seems.

Yes, against France as well.

Besides those first five or so minutes we dominated the game and the french just sat back and didn't want any part of participating in the game.

Sure, Özil isn't a winger but thanks to the injury to Gomez and the fact that guys like Schürrle, Götze or Podolski wouldn't really help the team, there wasn't much else he could do.
And like I've said, we lost that game because of Schweinsteiger's brain fart and not because of tactics.

Though, like I've said as well, he could've made a better decision in collecting the team by taking a guy like Hahn, who could've played up front and would've kept Müller available for the wings or a guy like Brandt, who, right now, fits better in that passing game of the team.

But hey there's something good. Poldi still wants to "play" for the team and will take a spot from a guy way more deserving for yet another tournament...

Schweinsteiger goes down as the 11th greatest German of all time. I count both club and country achievements, if it was only for the NT Podolski and Klose would be in there.

1. Franz Beckenbauer
2. Gerd Müller
3. Lothar Matthäus
4. Fritz Walter
5. Karl-Heinz Rumenigge
6. Sepp Maier
7. Philipp Lahm
8. Uwe Seeler
9. Herr Kroos
10. Oliver Kahn
11. Bastian Schweinsteiger
12. Matthias Sammer
13. Manuel Neuer
14. Jürgen Klinsmann
15. Paul Breitner
Dirk Nowitzki, Steve Nash, Kevin Garnett, Toni Kroos, Pep Guardiola, Ernst Happel, Joachim Löw.

Gunter Netzer surely deserves a spot, I would think.

Tough. You have Sammer who was a Ballon D'or winner and Klinsmann who had amazing tournaments in the 90s and also a legend in England. Breitner wasnt too bad either.

Poldi retires from the national team. Great guy and he had great moments, but I'm glad he made this decision. Jogi would've given him a spot on the team forever as the mascot and Poldi simply doesn't deserve it at this point.

Only right he and Schweini are leaving together.

These guys from that generation deserve more credit than they get. Sommermärchen was a huge moment and a turning point in German history(people were again proud to be Germans) and guys like Schweinsteiger, Podolski, Lahm were a big part of that with their open approach to media and public which was unusual in the German NT before.

They all get a lot of credit for what they did for our NT, I think they'll be fine.

Damn, things are getting emotional and the game hasn't even started. I'll miss Schweini a lot, he's a true legend.

Such a boring game though. Zero atmosphere like most of the German NT home games. It's mostly casual fans who go to German NT games. Not like club football in Germany where you have all the Ultras who create the special atmosphere.

I bet at least 30% of the people in the stadium are women. SMH.

Making rankings of players that played in different eras an positions.............dont think is the way to go about it.

Much better to do an All time Mannschaft team.

Id go with

------------------------------------------------------Maier--------------------------------------------------

Lahm------------------------Beckenbauer----------------------Sammer------------------Schnellinger
-------------------------------Matthaus--------------------------Schuster--------------------------------
-Scholl------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Breitner---------
--------------------------------Muller----------------------------Rummenige----------------------------

Back Ups:

----------------------------------------------Neuer-------------------------------------------------
----------Vogts ------------Kohler--------------------- Schwarzenbeck ------Briegel
-----------------------------Hoeness----------------Stielike------------------------
---Fritz Walter-------------------------------------------------------------Netzer
-------------------------------Seeler------------------Klinsmann----------------------------

Herr Kroos is an obvious starter. World Cup winner and 2 x Champions League winner with 2 different clubs. He has actually done it outisde the Bayern comfort zone unlike many other German players.

And it wouldn't be Kroos but Herr Kroos. He's going to keep forcing that **** nickname on us.
