Post#1 » by sovietchild » Mon Jul 10, 2017 5:17 pm

What do you guys think? Does paying 70M for 28 year old Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang seem reasonable?

No.
70 mil. is only reasonable for players who have a considerable amount of prime years left. Auba has 3-4 left at best.

Yeah, he's probably worth that going by the current striker market (Lukaku for €85m, Higuain for €90m, Lacazette for €60m). He still has at least a couple of high level years remaining, is a proven goalscorer and a big draw for fans with his speed and athleticism.

I suspect he'll go for even more than that if he ends up at PSG or China.

Personally, no. It's too big a risk for someone on the verge of 30 who relies heavily on his pace. You're getting 2-3 seasons of his prime, and that's assuming he adapts seamlessly to whatever team ponies up the money. If it takes him a season to adapt, that considerably narrows the prime playing years you're paying all that money for. After that, you have a player who will probably decline quickly due to loss of pace and athleticism as he ages.

The consolation of spending that amount of money on a young player is that if things go belly up, there's still some resale value to recoup your losses. If after one or two seasons he's unsettled, or a flop, there's no way you're getting close to the original fee in a move.

But this is the modern transfer market with teams who can afford to make a move like this, take the potential financial hit, and keep spending.

Aubameyang creates a lot of buzz and sells a lot of shirts. He is rather known and is considered a world-class striker.

He is worth it, I believe he has 3-4 great seasons ahead of him and that alone makes it worth it for a club in need of a striker.

Kyle Walkers seems to be going for 50+...
