England had a grand total of 1 shot on goal over the final 118 minutes of the match. Not even remotely good enough.

How can you let an Arsenal player take the last penalty lol?

Lot of key matches decided by shootout, including the final and one of semifinals.

Seems like more than usual in key international competitions.

To be fair to Saka, putting a teenager in that kind of position is ridiculous. The fifth penalty is often the most key. He looked poor during the match as well, as most of our forward line did, the occasion was clearly too much for him.

Despite England's progress I still don't rate Southgate as a tactician. Really poor game management after a bright start and excellent team goal. England's press shriveled and Italy grew into the game in the second half and they started finding gaps, which was probably the time to bring on subs. Of course, he didn't make any changes until they had scored. Italy defended well but didn't offer all that much either, and scored off a scruffy crappy goal. They really should have held on and won but found a way to blow it as usual. Excruciating.

I don't even blame Rashford, Sancho and Saka. Penalties are rough, especially in a final.

All credit to the Italians though, they were probably the best team in the tournament. England would have been worthy winners too, but if you can't get it done at home then you have to wonder when it will happen.

Now I can look forward to watching Spurs in the Europa Conference League. I hate this sport.

I don't think either Saka or Southgate deserves much blame for that particular PK anyway. It was far from the worst penalty of the shootout. Sometimes, goalkeepers guess right. It's also easy to say Saka is inexperienced and they should have predicted this outcome, but some youngsters are more fearless than veterans because of their inexperience. Unfortunate ending for England, but frankly they looked lucky to even make it to the shootout.

Like you said above, Southgate is a problem. You can have all the talent in the world (and England had quite a bit), but you have to use them and make them work.

That Chiellini collar yank will bring me chuckles for years. That's a man doing what he had to do to get the job done.

I'm ready for the next 55 years of unwarranted arrogance and overhype from English footballing media.

From what I've seen over the duration of this tournament both around here and on social media, the most profoundly annoying and arrogant people have typically been among England's detractors rather than the opposite.

I like seeing Maguire step up and smash that penalty. But **** deal about Rashford and Sancho.

Was surprised Saka took the 5th. I know Sterling is **** at pens but that still seemed weird to me when it happened. Felt bad for Saka even though I was happy for Italy to win.

As silly as it sounds that early goal hurt England IMO , it put them in a shell. You can’t just give up so much possession and think the other team won’t score . I don’t understand why Mount played so much. Grealish came on and it got exciting , he should played much more . I’m just not a southgate fan at all.

Southgate man.
Why would you ever pick a teenager to take the fifth pen in a shootout?
Also, making subs, just for the pens is stupid.

Were the more experienced players affraid? Because if so, they should also take the blame.
Where were Phillips, Shaw, Sterling, Stones and Grealish?

Sterling and Grealish are the ones who should have stepped up and taken one. At least one of them in place of Saka. Particularly Sterling.

You have a real problem with England don't you? Is it an inferiority complex? We got to the final and matched the champions. Good tournament for us again.

Well deserved for Italy, they have been the best team the whole tournament.

You talk such crap. If the attendance wasn't increased the final was going to be moved to Hungary or Rumania because UEFA wanted enough seats for their family and friends. Get your facts right if you ever can.

Should have been a red card like the stamp on Grealish. Ref had no intention of sending someone off in a final though - no balls.
