Wahl was detained earlier during the tournament by Qatari security guards at a stadium when he arrived to a game wearing a rainbow soccer ball T-shirt. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. Wahl, on his Substack, wrote that security guards refused to let him in, detained him for 25 minutes and demanded he remove his shirt.

Not saying they killed him, but this is one hell of a coincidence if they didn't.

Journalists are not safe in that country:

We know what happened to Khashoggi, so we know these regimes go to great lengths to do something like this.

If the Qatari government did have something to do with this, they certainly wouldn't be the first to do something horrendous to protect their interests. Frankly, that's what makes it so believable. Particularly when you're dealing with a country that has a massive track record of cracking down on dissent. To say nothing of their neighbors. So yeah, that's a pretty massive coincidence to swallow that a prominent Western journalist shows up dead a day after publishing a scathing piece in the middle of an event they've spent years and billions planning in order to generate international prestige.

it is completely outrageous that FIFA allowed Qatar to host the world cup- horrible anti-gay laws, terrible treatment of workers, mistreatment of journalists. Just horrendous

Apparently he was complaining about chest pains. A lot of details on Reddit. The good news is that his wife works/worked for Biden administration and the chief of staff was called by her. Hopefully we get some more info.

I'm in the no such thing as coincidence until proven otherwise camp.

This is having a strong reaction from followers and fellow journalists. Nobody believes this was just a mysterious natural death. Qatar doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

Chest pain = myocarditis.

I'll leave at that.

again, too early to say, but sounds like he had underlining health conditions and was complaining about chest pain for a while before it happened, some reporting bronchitis.

we'll see if usual xenophobic lot here who want this to be foul play so bad will apologize if they are proven devastatingly wrong after the toxicology report.

of course none of this isn't gonna stop people from politicizing his tragic death before the body is even cold.

I don't see the big gain the Qatari government has in killing this guy.

Like even if you take morals or ethics out of the equation, what is there to gain by killing the guy? Satisfying an honor code or something? And then pit that against the risk. If it's discovered they did, it would be a massive stain on what's been considered to be a pretty well done World Cup. It would also create a diplomatic nightmare with the US. Granted, as we saw with the Saudis that can be overcome, but why give yourself the headache at all?

I'm not saying it's impossible. Lots of times people choose the risk side of the risk/reward spectrum. It just seems unlikely to me.

i doubt there is qatari involvement but it speaks volumes that no one would be shocked if they were actually involved.

Sudden adult death syndrome aka SADS has actually become a common thing this year.

There are a ton of mainstream newspaper articles about being just passing away randomly. Even athletes are being hit at an alarming rate.

There isn’t actually an increase in sudden deaths.

It is nuts that the stadium didn’t have a bunch of AEDs nearby by though. Those are common in the smallest venues in Canada and you’d think the World Cup would have simple first aid equipment like that.

apparently he visited a clinic on two different occasions this week for 'bronchitis like/related symptoms'.

not sure why his brother claimed he was 'fully healthy', clearly he had some health issues. again not sure if related or not, but curious how that's being left out of the reporting (for obvious reasons) in some of the original posts.
