The US World Cup Squad!

Post#1 » by kdawg32086 » Wed Jun 24, 2009 8:30 pm

I'm starting to get excited for the World Cup next summer. There are a lot of talented players within the system. As of now, who do you think has secured a spot for next summer? Who is probably out of the squad as of now? Who are the guys still in consideration?

I'd say that the following are 100% locks for the squad:
Tim Howard
Landon Donovan
Clint Dempsey
Jozy Altidore
Oguchi Onyewu
Carlos Bocanegra

Michael Bradley and Benny Feilhaber should be there. Davies, Kljestan, and Adu will be there too unless the next year goes terrible wrong for them.

If you ask me this is waste of thread but I can understand you are happy you just won so you decided to make a thread to talk about it like you just won the World Cup. No but seriously you don't see us Europeans make threads for our countries.

Best guess as to who could start, depending on health:

Howard
Cherundolo Onyewu DeMerit Bocanegra
Dempsey Bradley Jones Donovan
Altidore Ching

RB is becoming interesting, thanks to the play of Spector in this tournament. Hejduk was really a leader in the earlier qualifying stages and Cherundolo is considered to be the best RB in the system. I think Boca has locked up LB, for now anyway. Altidore/Ching have shown to pair up well, I expect that up top against Mexico. Beasley is losing steam and doesn't figure to be a starter anymore. He might have to fight to earn a spot in South Africa next year with his subpar play in '09.

Ching? I have never been sold on him. Beasley was a huge disappointment for them this tournament.

True but I don't want to talk about American football which is not even that good. They had the lady luck on their team today to beat Spain. But yeah the only positive thing I see from this is that Football can grow more in United States, but they need to get rid of the bloody name "soccer" that's just an insult to Football.

From a Bundesliga POV, how would you judge the chances for

Mike Bradley
Steve Cherundolo
Heath Pearce
Luis Robles

Smoove, stop crying!
Get your Bosnian HDTV in advance, beacause no way your boys will qualify for the World Cup.
Enjoy the show and don't forget the Bosnian popcorn!

I agree that Feilhaber and Bradley should be on the squad, but I'm not sure they're locks yet. And even though Davies has played well lately, I think he still has some work to do to make the team. You figure Altidore won't be kept off the squad. Then, there's Donovan who can play anywhere from midfield to striker. Josh Wolff and Brian Ching are both still considered active internationally and either guy would make a good experienced striking partner for Altidore. And then, you have Eddie Johnson in the mix too.

Bradley- Probably makes the squad. He's starting in central midfield right now and his Dad is the coach.

Cherundolo- I think he's almost a lock. You don't pass up on experience like that and he's the best RB on the team.

Pearce- Probably won't make the team. We have a lot of defenders and a lot of them are better than Pearce.

Robles- I think it's a 50/50 chance right now. Howard and Guzan are locks for the squad so it's between Robles and Troy Perkins.

Then don't :)
That's why theres separate threads for different things. I don't feel like talking about the turkish league which isn't that good, but I don't go in there and complain.

Robles' stock seems to be rising in the system. Obviously, we won't get to see him this tournament but if he gets games in for Kaiserslautern, he'll be in the running for #3. I wouldn't count out the vet Hahnemann, who might start for Wolves in the Premiership if they sell Hennessey to a bigger club.

Pearce's chance of making an impact seems to have passed. Bocanegra might have locked up LB and it appears Bornstein is ahead of him on the chart.

Ching? I have never been sold on him.

I'm not the biggest fan either but he does the dirty work and sets up others well. I thought him and Altidore have worked well together. He's also a threat on set pieces with his head and size. If not injured, Connor Casey doesn't go to South Africa and Ching likely starts a couple games.

What that's crazy, we are seating 2nd and ahead by 4 points of the 3rd team and our attack is tied for 1st in Europe for the best attack with 18 goals in 5 matches, you have to yourself be honest and say that's quite good. Also we are doing great because we have a World Class Manager but I'm really happy how we are doing. Understand? lol I know you like that quite by your "buddy" haha.

And good luck to you guys, hope you don't get another early exit

I'm hoping Stuie Holden gets called up soon. He's probably one of our best attacking midfielders, but with Dempsey, Donovan, and Altidore guaranteed spots, I'm not sure if he could play a big role. Bradley should just move his soon from D-mid to more of an attacking role; he's not as good as Clark or Edu defensively.

Then get the hell out of the thread. We're not going to waste our time justifying our team.

What's the rudeness about? I take your opinions kindly and respectful but you are telling me get the hell out of the thread? Come on now lad, you even it know yourself that the U.S. team is not that good.

Howard isn't on the Gold Cup squad, so that means Guzan is starting for the tournament. BUT: If we win our first to games in group play, will Bradley play Perkins or Robles for the third game? I sure hope so.

Also, I'm surprised Chad Marshall doesn't have more caps. I think he's prob the best young defender on the national team. I'd take him over Pearce, Spector, and Bornstein in a heartbeat.

I haven't seen the squad for the Gold Cup, what's the backline look like?
