The Gold Cup Thread

Post#1 » by Munchlaxatives » Sun Jul 5, 2009 4:21 am

The US beat Grenada 4-0, the second goal coming from Stuart Holden, who I thought was playing better than Adu. Weak competition, but Robbie Rodgers showed his stuff.

And before you say anything Smoove, you don't need to tell us you don't care.

I missed the Canada game yesterday, but I think they won. Mexico plays a slightly better team than Grenada in Nicaragua tomorrow.

I don't know much about the Gold Cup, but it's a good opportunity for young players to shine.
I was watching the US game.
Adu almost scored a beauty when the goalkeeper was outside, but ball hit the post.
I believe the Mexico game today will be right here in Oakland, California.

Aguirre better figure out Sabah doesn't belong in the national team, not even on the C or D team. Barrera and Jager were good again, I didn't think anyone else played too well..

And what the hell was wrong with Torrado's forehead? Mexicans don't get sunburnt.

The Mexico - Nicaragua match was in Oakland, CA.
The stadium was almost sold out.
Mexico won 2-0, the first goal was a very questionable penalty.
Blackmamba, was this Mexico's A team?
If yes, I'm not impressed.....

C team, maybe? A lot of those players have less than 5 caps.

well, beating nicaragua 2-0 is... meh... sad? lol... i don't get why aguirre used such a defensive team vs. a team like nicaragua... again, very very very sad...

and yes, this could be mexico's C/D team, which i don't get why they are playing considering that the most important game is vs. the us in august and that they should use this tournament to get the team together for that game.

sabah is with the NT right now because of the last couple of years he's been the mexican with the most goals scored in the mexican league but i don't think he's in the level to be in the NT. sure, he scores "many" goals, but none of them are important goals.

and torrado is white as snow and i think he has some sort if skin issues that he has to use a lot of solar protection so he doesn't burn pretty bad.

Wow, quadruple post.

Soccer is big in Mexico, it is a country with a strong European influence and the sport has a long tradition there and yet they never reach the level of Argentina or Brazil. Why do players and the sport not develop as one would perhaps expect?

Any opinions on this from Mexican fans?

Mentality.

For many years the mexican team was known as the green mice because they would always fail to deliver when expectations where high.

it's a shame that with all the resources football has in mexico there doesn't seem to be a quality team.

A lot of times, a great player will refuse to go to Europe to big teams. Part of it is race issues, Mexicans to this day aren't liked in Spain, the Mexicans' best chance at going to Europe.

The governing body and a lot of the teams are greedy, not helping the players' cause. It's starting to change with a lot of young Mexicans going to youth teams in Europe(the most famous of which are the Dos Santos brothers.)

Oh, and fun fact: none of Nicaragua's players are professionals if the play-by-play guy was right. None. That's...weird, especially considering the talent of some of those guys.

None? That's crazy.

It made the 2-0 win that much more embarrassing. No joke, a friend of mine from Nicaragua had no idea there was a national soccer team.

Barrera and Gio are the only good midfielders that have played for Mexico so far.
