ROBERT ENKE DIES AT AGE 32



Hannover 96 has confirmed that national goalkeeper Robert Enke (32) is dead. The circumstances of his death remain unclear. Enke had given his comeback last week after missing 2 months because of a stomach infection. Until his infection, he had been goalkeeper of the German national squad.

[Unconfirmed reports say that Enke comitted suicide by a stepping in front of a train.]

Jörg Neblung (Enke's personal manager) has just confirmed that Enke committed suicide. Police previously already "strongly suspected it".

A link to his tragic personal issues (Enke lost his daugther 3 years ago) remains debatable.

Saw it on the ESPNews bottom line about 40 minutes ago while eating lunch.

terrible news. i knew him from his disastrous spell at Fenerbahce but he admirably turned things around and even became NT keeper, rest in peace.

Slowly but surely some details emerge...

FACT: Martin Kind, the president of Hannover 96, has revealed that Enke was in psychological treatment since the passing of his daughter.

FACT: according to official police reports, Enke drove his sportscar to the nearest train tracks, stepped out, left his wallet there and walked on the tracks. The train hit him with 100 mph, he must have been killed instantly.

FACT: Enke was seen as the surefire #1 keeper for the WC 2010, but then he got a nasty stomach virus. In the crucial Russia game, his stand-in Adler had a A+ game and moved ahead. Fellow rivals Wiese and Neuer also had good seasons, relegating him from #1 to #4 in record speed.

RUMOR: Martin Kind said that Enke "seemed even more tight lipped and quiet" recently than usual

RUMOR: A few hours before, he skipped training and was unavailable, and drove to the grave of his daughter instead. Every attempt of wife and personal manager to reach him were unsuccessful.

I may be grasping for straws, but I am just in deep shock and groping for an explanation...

this is incredibly sad to hear. I was in shock when I read these news 30 minutes ago.

from what I've read so far, is that his suicide was not caused by any issues he had in his professional career. so it basically comes down to personal issues and I'm sure (pure speculation though) that his daughter passing away three years ago was the main reason.

One day after, things seem to clear up.

On a press conference, his widow and his psychologist revealed that since 2003, Enke was suffering from terrible depressions. Interesting (and shocking) detail: according to his psychologist, he had developed a debilitating fear of failure and total loss of self esteem, triggered by his failed Barca engagement. In 2003, he had been in daily therapy for over half a year.

The death of his daughter "only" quickened this process, but acted like throwing a napalm grenade into an already raging fire. More and more, Enke felt like a loser, a liar and a cheat because he was unable to beat his problems. His worst fear was that the adoption of his second daughter would fail if anyone found out.

His widow described that Enke had been thinking about suicide constantly. She desperately tried to steer his thoughts away from soccer, away from his dead daughter, tried to show him her love, but it was all futile. Wife and psychologist tried to make him enter a mental hospital, but Enke already made up his mind how to "solve" the problems.

Most heartbreaking quote of his widow: "I thought that love would conquer all... I was wrong."

In his suicide letter, Enke said how sorry he was for his suicide, and how he felt how much he had let his wife, his friends and the world down. Robert, if you can read this:

YOU WERE A HERO. AN ENTIRE NATION SALUTES YOU. WE WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP 2010 FOR YOU AND PUT IT ON YOUR AND YOUR DAUGHTER'S GRAVE.

My condolences to his Family..
But I think Point Forward for calling him a Hero..I will never be able to fathom the feeling of depression. But to be considered a hero for quitting should not be the case..imo will give the concept of somebody commiting suicide similar to a martyr.
Now in re: to winning the World Cup 2010 and providing him a medal in his grave would be a great gesture. and due to the unfortunate situation. I will be rooting for Germany (behind Spain ofcourse).!

Sad, very sad. At first I thought it was another player dying of heart conditions but when I knew how he died ough...

i believe Point Forward called him a hero because he was a national team player, not because he killed himself.

Enke was a hero for me because he went from rock bottom (washed out in Barca, Fener, Teneriffa + unemployed for longer stretches) to the top by going to frigging Hannover 96. H96 regularly got 50+ goals against, and not because Enke was there, but ALTHOUGH Enke was there.

Deisler has just published his autobio in which he says how the pressures of professional soccer (e.g. materialism, hedonism, getting double crossed by so-called friends, and a merciless yellow press) made him deeply depressed. He seems heavily scarred and avoids the limelight, but seems ok with his life w/o soccer.

I feel uneasy when I compare Deisler and Enke. Deisler was seen as a softie and a loser when he spiralled into depression, and Edmund Stoiber (minister of Bavaria) even called him "the worst waste of money in the history of Bayern Munich." But now, nobody dares to be that ignorant anymore...

Awful story! This is just insane, I wish his family peace.
