How did Royce go from averaging 55% from 2P% during his Utah days and closing out his final season there shooting almost 61% to not even hitting 38% from 2 the season after?

Probably losing some of his athleticism which exasperated the one thing that he has always been very poor at which is finishing around the rim.

Isolations – Anyone but Royce, please

Let’s all make a pact here and now to never give the ball to Royce O’Neale in an isolation situation. He appears to know this too, as he is in the bottom 10% in isolation attempts. He turns it over, he doesn’t draw fouls, he shoots miserably, and he knows it. Thank you Royce for staying in the offense.

Finishing – The WORST wing finisher

I wish Royce was better at this. He has shown some athleticism, and he’s quick off the dribble. He can get on top of the rim. As you can see, that’s mostly wasted. Royce doesn’t drive, and he’s in the bottom 30% in adjusted drives/75 possessions. When he does shoot he can’t finish at all, coming in the bottom 25% of wings adjusted finishing %. He is taking difficult shots at the rim, probably because they are late shot clock attempts.

Royce grades out in the 2nd(!!!!!) percentile among wings in overall finishing talent(getting to the rim+finishing). That’s horrific. I must imagine this is improve-able. If teams start keying on his shooting, he’s going to need to beat close outs to the rim and finish.

Looking at his 2PA assisted, it went from almost 70% in Utah to just under 40% in his first season in Brooklyn...I don't know what kind of shenanigans they were playing over there but only 40% of his 2's being assisted are basically Devin Booker numbers. Luckily, last season it was back to the norm (67%) which also saw his 2P% pick back up to around 50%. It's not a big deal for me because ultimately he doesn't take many 2's but that 37% stood out like a sore thumb

I think Royce is going to have a great season on both ends of the floor now that he'll be playing with a capable PG and a coach who has ran really good offense and defenses in the past.

So far he is outplaying his contract. Perfect fit as an all-around two-way player who doesn't make mistakes and is a reliable defender to put in front of the best perimeter players. Low usage and floor spacer. Only 0.9 TOs per game.

Really good boxing out and playing big, tough and smart defender.

He adds lots of intangibles to his numbers and he is leading the team in +/- with +64.

10.4 points
6.4 rebounds
2.3 assists
25.7 mpg

Shooting 53/53/89

All in all he looks an advanced Tucker/Crowder hybrid.
