Sure they can, when you are waived you are no longer under contract with a team.

well the Globe here reported that they couldnt officially talk to him until he passed through waivers... so I would guess you can claim him off waivers, but for some reason its tampering to speak to him before then... not 100% sure, but DA and Doc Rivers are still withholding commentary, so I would imagine theres some league rule motivating that

Plus they'd still be able to sign Giricek as well.

You are $3.5M into the luxury tax right now. If you claim Cassell, you will not only pay the $1.7M he had left on his Clippers contract, but also the luxury tax for his full salary, which was $6.15M.

I rather have Pike than Steph even for the vet min. You think Steph would be happy to ride the pine making minimum dollars? Steph is done. You guys have to understand that he's not the same person he was when he played in Phoenix. For the past 4 years, he's been given everything he's wanted to the detriment of the organization. Its like Pandora's box. You can't really go back to being humble and gracious and doing things the way other people want you to. And I'm not just talking about on the court stuff, but off the court as well as far as community responsibilities, appearances, public relations...And no way will he take a backseat to anyone or be told what to do at this point.

And on top of all that, there's no way he'd fit in here! He is not, nor has he ever been, a running point guard able to push the tempo of a game. His instinct is to trot up court and set up for a half court game. Mike and Colangelo knew this which is why he was traded. Look how much success Banks' has had here and others have mentioned how much his game reminds of Marbury...
