Travis Outlaw

Traivis is looking to start with the traiblazers but it seems like they are so deep that they are not gurantee him to start. So it got me thinking about the versitility that Outlaw can bring to our team. Not to mention the defense precense that he could also bring along side with Matt Barnes. My questions to every Suns fan is....

What would you be willing to give up in order to get this versitile foward??

I came up with a couple of trades, let me know what you think???

This would give Portland some cap space for the future. Jerome James is a free agent after this year.

Although Mike D would surely love to have Barbs in NY. I think Portland would want future pics in any deal - that seems to be their M.O. Gives them flexibility, keep 'em if there's someone who looks right for them, deal them off if not.

But I think PHX will stand pat right now and see who they can pick up later

The numbers work but the personnel doesn't add up. Neither trade brings us someone who can really fill the hole left in the Shooting Guard spot. Batum and Outlaw are more natural Small Forwards (6'8" and 6'9" respectively), though Batum could play Shooting Guard a little. The problem that I see with the second trade is we end up with 5 players whose natural position is Small Forward and Portland both loses most of their SF options and overstacks their Center position to 4 (not counting the guys who play both PF and Center on their team either).

Grant Hill, Boris Diaw, Matt Barnes, Travis Outlaw and Nicolas Batum all in line for that spot in that scenario, and even though some can play the 2 as well, Bell will easily get more playing time at SG over them, pushing our 5 Small Forwards to compete only for a backup spot at the 2 as an alternative.

There's a difference between creating competition for a position on a team and harboring tension because there's too many candidates on one team for one job. This happens and often has negative effects on teams with 4 or 5 Point Guards who get faced with learning to play as undersized Shooting Guards to get minutes. Again the numbers work, but GM or coaches would unlikely favor a move that takes the one spot we have the most personnel at and increase it even more.

Plus, Outlaw sounds like he's looking to be a starter, and trading him to Phoenix is unlikely to guarantee him that, and probably if he stays in Portland (while he wont be a starter), he'll get more playing time since they have fewer options for his natural position.

Neither teams would do those trades.

NY would like that trade but nobody wants Jerome James. Outlaw for Bell is interesting.

Stole the words right outta my mouth. Though, I do like Outlaw but it would be too hard to make the salaries work.

Trades good or bad aside, why would this situation be better for Outlaw than Portland is?
