This was definitely one of the worst coached games I've seen all season.
We finally had a good line-up in the 2nd qtr to limit their PnR and not ONCE did we go to it in the entire 2nd half. Unbelievable. Hill on Paul and Marion on Chandler meant they tried to post up Chandler which worked great for us!
Instead in the 3rd we go with LB and Banks on Paul. OK Banks did some good work but he wasn't abusing us one-on-one they were constantly running screen.
And what was with that small line-up. I called it at the time and it absolutely killed us. We were so worried about Chandler/Armstrong killing us inside we let Peja and MoPete destroy us from outside.
I can't really fault any of the players too be honest. Nash had a particularly quiet 2nd half and had a TO on that crucial play where Paul stole the ball but after a 21pt first half I can't be too critical on him.
Marion was quiet offensively but I felt the fact that we forced him to get going early in the 3rd was detramental. If we can win without him scoring who cares if he's scoring or not. Just keep doing what you're doing. He played some great D on Chandler in the 2nd qtr, just keep going with that!
Instead we start the 3rd with Amare on Chandler and we get caught in the same stupid trapping system that didn't work in the 1st qtr.
Can't fault any of the players so this one lands firmly on the coach. Quite simply he got it wrong and I hope he learns from it.

it hurt marion and amare the way the hornets worked the D on the pick and roll to focus on the rollers and make nash score
Our offense wasn't the problem IMO. We scored 20pts in the 4th but Nash didn't even play half of it.

Great post. We don't have the talent to be an elite defensive team, but we do have the talent to be a passable defensive team. Effort and coaching are the two factors which determine whether the Suns will play atrocious D or passable D on a given night. I can't fault the effort tonight, but I can certainly fault the coaching.

In the duel of the best PGs, Paul 1: Nash -1.
Nash tried to score early on, couldn't defend anything which led to Pargo having a great game. And he didn't pass to Amare with a great position under the basket a couple of times. So, despite having a lot of contributors in LB, Diaw, Banks and Hill, we can't score down the game as we never really tried to establish Amare as the main threat. Without a consistent inside-out game, it became scramble offense (Suns game!) which didn't work out.
On defense, they stuck to simple p&r involving Amare. For some reason, the coaching stuff stuck to ordering Amare to rotate out to cover the PG each time and our defense got picked apart too easily. Why could they try to have Amare stay inside and let Paul shoot those jumpers to beat us, while having everybody else shut down? Wait, we can't do it since this is an epic duel of the greatest PG and that'd give it to Paul on that front!

It doesn't take a genius to figure out you need a bigger lineup to rebound the ball. Skinner had 5 boards in 7 minutes, Boris had only 3 in 32 minutes. It also doesn't take a genius to figure out you don't switch off of Mo Pete and Peja....Im so sick of gimicky switching defense and three guard lineups. It doesn't work ALL the time, Coach.
We lost this game in the 3rd quarter, with that inexplicable lineup of three small guards, Boris and Shawn. That allowed Peja, who's about 6 inches taller than LB, in particular to get hot. This was in contrast to the last portion of the 2nd quarter where we had Hill at the 2.
Why the hell did Skinner get ZERO run in the 2nd half? WTF

Hey Mike, just because David West didn't play doesn't mean you weren't gonna get crushed on the boards

You got outcoached in the 2nd half, hence we lost.

The 2005-06 Suns will always have a special place in my heart

Just got home from going out and saw the boxscore. Hmmmm looks like a very lopsided game in the second half. THe only positives I see here are:
1. We outrebounded a team (just ignore those Offensive Rebs)
2. 12 Blocked Shots! Nice!
3. Banks played more than 2 minutes. But ONLY because of no Raja.
4. Our bench played extremely well. 50 pts vs 7 pts from NO.
But by reading the posts it looks like our team was outcoached. And my lord! Hornets had 18 more shots than the Suns!?!?!?! That's like them having an extra quarter of play!
And did Chris Paul really play ALL 48 mins of this game!??!? That's insane. That guy has always been a favorite player of mine since his High School days. Once I heard and read about his story of scoring 61 points and purposely missing a Free throw attempt I knew this kid had something. One of the most heartwarming stories related to sports.

A. You give them 18 more shots.
Part 2.
Q. How do you lose a game when you shoot over 53% from the field and out rebound the other team by 2 boards.
A. You give them 18 more shots, whilst letting them get 15 offensive boards and having a differential of 6 for turnovers.

Props to Kerrsed for the sig

had a thunderous dunk towards the end of the game which would have been the most important 2 pts of the game if the suns had managed to get a defensive stop on the next poss.
Thanks. Yeah he will always do something on the court. If he is not scoring he is playing defense. I know a lot of times that is what is said of Raja, but it's clear on the stat sheet what Marion does.

im not saying leave banks in, im just hoping the coaches noted his defensive effort
Not totally true. I'm watching the 4th right now. The 4th quarter started with the Suns being up by 3 (93-90). Grant Hill scores first on what the Hornets and even the Suns commentators thought was a double dribble that wasn't called. Then after Hilton blocked Amare's shot, Paul ran straight into the lane and scored 2 back to back layups. Going straight at Banks bringing the score to Suns 95, Hornets 94 at the 9:20 mark. Then Paul ran into the lane again against both Banks and Amare with another running layup bringing the score to 99 Suns, Hornets 98. All this with banks supposedly defending him. At about the 7:22 mark Paul shot a shot that went short with Banks on him. Not close on him but he was there. Then at the 7:05 mark, they called a ticky tack reach in foul on Banks for reaching in on Paul. I could go on because I'm at the 5:42 mark right now and Paul just did a put back on Bowen's miss (with Banks still in the game) but I have to log off. But it's just to say that Paul started 'destroying' as you have said, while Banks was still in the game.
Edited to add that I'm not in any way discrediting Banks' defensive effort.

Sweet! Ya I was at this game too, I think it's the one we won against the Hornets.
...oh wait, no. We lost every sing;e game we played against the Hornets.
Lock this and let this thread die with the memory of the mess that was the Suns 07-08 season...
