The Steve Kerr appreciation thread

Post#1 » by MaryvalesFinest » Thu Dec 11, 2008 6:31 pm

Boris Diaw, Raja Bell and Sean Singletary for Jason Richardson, Jared Dudley and a 2010 second round pick.

I know some people may have different opinions on the Shaq trade and Porter hiring but if you look at this trade, even if you're not a fan of Steve Kerr you have to give him credit for pulling it off.

Boris Diaw's 9M contract was one of the worse and most difficult contracts in the league to trade, he may have been a decent player but he was worth no where near 9M, not to mention it also runs a year longer than J-Rich's contract and Diaw puts up way less production.

Raja Bell had some great years with the Suns and will always be remembered taking that 3 point shot against the Clippers in the playoffs. He was getting up in age and losing his standing as one of the best defensive players, also chances are he wouldn't have resigned with the Suns in 2010 considering he disliked the new system but Bell was professional about it when he got traded and wished the Suns the best of luck.

Sean Singletary showed some flashes that he could be good in this league, we didn't see much of him but if he can find a rhythm with the Bobcats he can be in the league for a long time.

As for what the Suns got back, Jason Richardson, one of the most athletic players in the league and a proven 20 point scorer. If he can step up his play and flourish with the Suns he can become an all-star. He's been underated ever since he came into the league and even if he does average he would still be averaging more points than what Diaw and Bell did combine. I also know some people say he's not a good defender but his defense is also very underated and I have a feeling he can become a solid defender under Porter. If Richardson can do that I hope we can see him at the 2009 NBA All Star game or games in the future.

Also Jared Dudley, he was a #20 something pick during the 2007 NBA draft and a very underated player. He can basically if given the minutes put up the same production as Diaw expect he's payed about 8M less and is under a rookie contract. Not to mention the guy is a very underated defender and can guard multiple positions, he can have a bright future with the Suns.

Not to mention the Suns got a 2010 second round pick which would probally be between #30-40 and you can find some surprising players during that frame and getting a early second round pick which is not guranteed a contract can land the Suns a diamond in the rough.

All in all, even if you were upset about Kerr for past moves I think all or most Suns fans can come together and agree this was a great trade.

Thank you Steve

I do not remotely appreciate what Steve Kerr has done to this franchise.

Who would have thought when Kerr came here that in little over a year he would find a way to get rid of Thomas, Marion, D'Antoni, Jones, Diaw, and Bell? What would we have said if he announced his plans when he first came here?

Kerr has to be an enemy spy unleashed upon us by the Spurs.

Can you believe that there are only THREE players left from that dominant 06/07 team? 3?!

Nash, Barbosa, Amare.

That's it. That's all that remains from a team that started the season 0-4, went 61-17 the rest of the way, and was a hip check away from advancing to the WCF for the 3rd consecutive season.

We hired Kerr right after the 06/07 season, and that's what he's done...

A depressing thought. Do our rivalries with the Lakers and the Spurs even exist anymore?

Even if we beat the Spurs in the playoffs, like you say only three players felt the injustice of the suspensions that year. Hell, over half of the team wasn't around last year for the first round exit. For them, it'll probably be just the same as any other series.

On paper it looks good to acquire Jason Richardson. Hopefully it works out for the Suns, but there is no guarantee. I like the trade from Charlotte's standpoint better. Jason Richardson puts up good offensive stats, but I question the total impact he has on games. Amare Stoudamire was upset that he isn't featured enough. JRich is a guy who will have to take at least 15 shots per game, that's just the type of player he is. Terry Porter doesn't have an easy task on his hand managing the chemistry.

As for Steve Kerr I don't have too much positive to say. I am very surprised at what he's done. Causing a riff with D'Antoni, one of the best coaches in the NBA right now and replacing him with Terry Porter can't be defended in my opinion. That 06/07 team only needed tweaking. They could have made at least two more legit runs at a ring.
much respect to the 2011-2012 champions, Miami Heat, well deserved

Too early for this mary! He just pulled off a nice trade, but we have not see the fruits of this trade. With this trade and the shaq trade, I will give it a grade to see how they do this year in the playoffs, or if they get in at all.

+1 to all the people saying we should have kept the 06/07 team together.

That team was so close to another WCF and arguably a title when you think about how average that Cavs team was.

If Marion was a cancer in the locker room than they should have traded him for a similar player. I know Mike D pushed for the Shaq trade but I feel like if Kerr wasn't the GM and wasn't putting pressure on Mike than maybe it would have never happened and SSOL would still be alive and well.

Let's not forget that while the Mike D teams were poor defensively, they still went deep into the playoffs and were always in a position to get to the finals.

Kerr has steadily dismantled this winning culture and taken the team in a totally different direction with an unproven coach. This season we may be lucky to even get to the playoffs, nevermind going deep as we did under Mike.

I hope Kerr will prove me wrong but right now I have no appreciation for the guy at all.
