Alvin Gentry= Genius
Watching tonight's game every Suns fan could tell that Matt Barnes was struggling and not only with his shots but with many bad tournovers he commited. Then with about 5 minutes to play in the game, Gentry put in Dudley to take Barnes spot to finish up the game. It feels great to have a coach that knows how to properly coach this team and play the right guys that will get the job done. Sadly I can't say the same for Porter.

Gentry isn't afraid to sit somebody in favor of somebody else when he knows they're struggling. I like a coach that not only has the respect of its players, but can also get the best out of them. He does what's best for the team and I think that's why they've finally turned a corner.

Stromile didn't play very well in the first half and we didn't see him in the second half of the Denver game, which I thought was understandable. One thing about this team is that the guys who Gentry is playing now are playing well.

I think in this respect he moves away from D'Antoni's SSOL. D'Antoni would play one guy the whole game even if they are struggling because he has zero confidence in the bench. If D'Antoni was still coaching it's almost a guarantee Dudley would get no PT.
Dudley has been such a bright spot for us since Gentry took over. Today he came up with a clutch defensive play when he drew an offensive foul against Martin. Not to mention the rebounding and steals logs every night.
Even now Dragic has been playing pretty well. This is all just confidence. I didn't think there would be a better player's coach than D'Antoni until Gentry showed up and gave our bench the confidence they needed to perform.

He isn't the motivator D'Antoni was, but good to see him give the bench some burn instead of running the old guys into the nursery.
He's been doing all the right things since he took over : Went back to using the Amare/Nash PnR as our primary weapon, let Nash use his creativity instead of putting the brakes on him, went back to SSOL, played Barnes @ PF after Amare went down, gave Dudley an actual role on the team... Hopefully he keeps it up.
Too bad he wasn't there from day 1, this team would easily be a top 5 seed right now if they let Gentry run the team from the start instead of the dumbass that was Terry Porter.

Re: Alvin Gentry= Genius
Along with playing our bench and finding out we have some real depth there, it turns out we have a defensive lineup that still gets the job done on offense. I think Gentry really has the right touch and style for this team - the players like him, they're performing (overall) and he's getting production from guys who were overlooked under Porter. The six game slide hurt but we were in all those games until the end and I can't pin any of those losses on coaching. Remind me if I'm wrong on that
Were we playing the 2-3 zone before Gentry? It always seemed to me on a team that had defensive liabilities such as Nash and Shaq, a couple different zone looks were the way to go.
The only thing I see is that Barnes is just too inconsistent. He's going to want a serious raise this year anyway and will likely be gone, so that's self-correcting. If we draft well we can have an extremely solid bench next year, much like Toronto did a couple years ago. There was literally no drop-off in ability when they switched lineups, and that's something the Suns have never had.
Playoffs or no I'm encouraged. Of course, the way things have gone this year it's like being relieved because someone stopped driving nails into your forehead and now they're just kicking you in the balls.

Re: Alvin Gentry= Genius
Alvin Gentry is good.
Maybe he's just using D'Antoni's system, but the offense looks amazing. The cuts, the movement, it's picturesque. There are some really clean cuts because of the movement, and J-Rich looks like old school J-Rich because of it. Nash has a ton more freedom. Shaq is getting wide open some games because of the system.
Did anyone else notice that the Nash/Shaq PnR has actually started working? Teams are forced to follow Shaq and Nash is getting to the hoop a lot easier. Shaq is actually catching some nice passes and gets fouled more often then not, and sometimes he gets an easy 2.
I'd DEFINATELY keep him around next season, perhaps beyond.
