If Udoka gets cut from the Blazers sign him

Post#1 » by sunsfever68 » Mon Oct 5, 2009 12:39 am

I believe he signed a 1 year 1 million dollar deal with Portland to play with them. Read on realgm.com that the last spot on the Blazers will be between Udoka and Collins. If he gets cut, I'm assuming he'll sign for anything just to play so that means Kerr needs to make a move and sign him.

Reasons:

1. improvement on defense. We need that.
2. shooting(especially 3 point shooting). According to spurs fans he tailed off last season and was supplanted in his role by Roger Mason but maybe he could rediscover his touch here playing with Nash always helps.
3. he's an upgrade over Griffin or Tucker. One of them gets cut if he comes here. I think having both of them on the team is kind of a waste of one roster spot. Tucker has more talent Griffin more hustle/defense so it's up to the coaching staff who goes.

Obviously this situation has a low probability of happening even though it makes sense to do because of who runs the team at this current point.

Totally agree. He's tough, defensive minded, and can hit the 3. And cheap.
And if we don't get him, Boston or LAL will...

Udoka is definitely worth picking up.

Yeah I guess. Don't entirely see the point but he couldn't hurt.

J-Rich and Barbosa will take up all the shooting guard minutes.

Hill, Dudley, Clark and J-Rich will take up all the small foward minutes.

I wouldn't play the 32 year old Udoka before any of those players. But he'd be a good option in case of injury.

even more importantly tastic is the ability to hit the in-demand corner 3. very important since there's alot of high screen and rolls and the point guard ends up at about the elbow and easiest pass to make from there is to the corner for the three. Plus if you have good form on your shot I've found from playing it's the easiest three to make.

Adding Udoka would be a nice pickup. I'm thinking about calling the Suns office and leaving a message for Steve Kerr. When we traded for Richardson I was excited like many of us were for the potential havoc he'd cause. So I decided I wanted to reach out to Kerr and say nice move, ( hindsight 20/20 the move really wasn't that amazing it was more of an even trade...it wasn't a bad trade only bad part about it is Richardson's salary and if he doens't pan out this year it won't be a good deal really. Still need time to grade the trade. Dudley as a throw in was big though.)

So what I'm saying is I suggest we call the Phoenix Suns and get a message to Steve Kerr. When I called I actually got to his secretary I believe and she relayed the message to him(or so I hope). Our voice means something and just by saying we want Udoka won't get anything done. If he gets cuts I'm calling Kerr and telling him to pick him up. Idealistic? yes. Will it matter in the end? Probably not. But to me it's worth a shot.

If Udoka would like to sign here, why would Kerr not do this if he can get him for 1 million a year.

Those are the hangups. 1. salary 2. does he want to sign here.

I think Udoka would not take the approach of "gotta play for a contender" I think we could convince him to play here if we told him he'd get some time. He did sign with the Blazers so it's not like he chose the "i'm signing with a bona-fide title contender nobody else" rout.

So if Udoka wouldn't mind coming here, and the price is good why wouldn't Steve Kerr go after him? I can't think of any reasons other than he's incompetent I guess. I mean when your best move is drafting a guy that's a no-brainer(Earl Clark) that says something.

after posting that remark about Kerr I realized he was on board as GM I believe when he signed Grant Hill. That was his best move. Grant has been a class act and great player for us playing for a bargain in today's nba world.

I think Dudley's late season ability to hit that corner 3 (16-38 last 10 games of the season) means we probably won't see Udoka here unless Tucker or Griffin is released/moved...

nashrambler13, you're right we don't have room for him. The assumption of picking up Udoka is cutting either Tucker or Griffin. I think we should personally cut whichever one the coaches feel can't help th team as much. I don't see why we drafted Taylor Griffin at 45. That was a reach even late in the 2nd. He might've gone undrafted and we could've brought him to camp with us. Dudley and Griffin seem like the same kind of player with Griffin being a little tougher and a better rebounder I think. We'd cut one of them to make room for Udoka.

I'm so happy we got Dudley in the trade for J rich. He's exactly the kind of guy everyone needs on a team. the prototypical 8th man. Solid role-player. Does all things kind of well nothing too spectacular. Plays hard. Wants to play for Phoenix great attitude, gritty, wants to improve.

That's a good observation Tastic on Dudley's 3 point shooting from the corner. Maybe it was just me or did he seem a little slow when he'd shoot that 3 ball? Big part of hitting that shot and getting that shot is a quick release so you don't let the defense to adjust over and block the shot.

head scratcher to me as well. They must feel Dragic can be the point guard they need. Or they want to save face and not admit that Dragic isn't the 2nd best point guard in the draft. Chalmers is definitely better. If Lopez doesn't work out we'll be wishing we had picked him. I wanted Brandon Rush but Chalmers would've been nice. I am glad though we didn't take an offensive big like Darrell Arthur. With Amare here and if we sign him to an extension he'll provide all the offense we need from our bigs. Lopez needs to live up to his billing as a defensive presence, a shot blocker, and improve his rebounding. Hopefully a Ben Wallace type not as good obviously with maybe a little more offensive game.

As an Aussie I was pretty annoyed we didn't take Mills and instead drafted ANOTHER wing.

But yeah, Udoka is the kind of vet I'd love to have on our team. He's tough, does what you need and is a good defender. But I don't see him in the market after TGriff's contract gets guaranteed.

Actually I was thinking we should sign either Udoka or Collins, whichever is waived. lets give either one a minimum contract for 1 year.

I can see minutes at the SG spot late in the game if Udoka hits the three with consistency and holds his ground defensively. If we go small that is. Also some minutes in the third quarter maybe. There's not going to be a lot, but there are minutes to be earned if he does his things well. A heady veteran who hits his shot, plays defense and doesn't turn the ball over.

It would make sense because the Suns try and pick up the trash the Spurs leave behind.
