My Preseason Analysis on the Phoenix Suns

Post#1 » by Amen316 » Mon Oct 26, 2009 9:30 pm

Well to be honest I like the Suns as a run and gun team, always have liked the little engine that could book also. With that being said you better watch for what ask for because Kerr and Sarver may give you something you dont expect.

Front office:
They traded Shaq, wait in reality they gave him up for nothing. While on the surface you may say thats ok. The truth is Shaq is a rare commodity and in return for that trade the Suns will get literally 0 minutes and 0 games from that trade. Remember this is a team that barely got to .500 last season and now they are going to lose about 20pct of their offense and literally 80pct of their lane presence. Granted the economy has to be giving management fits but to be honest this has been going on since things were great so I really do not know how to say anything more than one key word - mismanagement.

The team went out and signed Channing Frye to replace the big fellow. Channing is a player the team has eyed since he was drafted by the NY Knicks back in 2005. Channing is a versatile big man that plays more like a SF than a center. Last year pct wise to minutes played he took the 4th most shots from 15-22ft. So lets stop right there for just a moment and see what this means. Is the Phoenix Suns thinking about putting Amare Stoudemire in the middle much like the Orlando Magic does Dwight Howard and having him play 1v1? If Channing Fryes defensive man sags down he is open for a perimeter 3. I would expect to see Channing shoot at least 3-4 Threes a game to take advantage of this. As far as rebounding goes Channing is really going to hurt the Suns bad because again he plays and positions himself more like a Perimeter player than a paint player.

Rookie Earl Clark
The team drafted Earl Clark that if was ready for the regular season would help the Suns win about 46-49 games this season. However Earl is on the same pace most rookies are and he will more than likely ahave a good game one nite and a bad one the next. This kid plays the paint much like Shawn Marion and if they would just let him run and pick up garbage he might actually help the team out more. However if he doesnt have the range to allow Amare to play the paint it will be better early to sit him.

Resigned Steve Nash-- enough said this guy should have his number retired before he retires and just play baarechested. Kidding of course but the idea is he is already in the rafters and I think we all hope this new experiment doesnt make him regret resigning here.

The rest of the team is basically unless they can not only embrace he new run and gun but make their place in the run and gun seem unrepaceable much like joe Johnson and Shawn Marion did.
I think this team could win 42 games but play at times like a team that could win 55games. They are goin to have weeks they look unbeatable and weeks they need to tear it down. Somewhere somehow this team needs a new energy player from somewhere and hopefully not at the expense of Amare or Steve.

If we rebound well, we will win a ton games. If we dont, Suns fans are in for a long season!
Maybe Jarron Collins can help a little.

Really, I liked everything you had to say Amen. Except for this... Is Channing going to be guarding out on the perimiter? I don't think so... He'll be in the paint guarding either 4 or 5's and it will be up to him to box them out and grab some defensive rebounds.

We can count on little to nothing in the offensive rebounding department with Frye.

Shuttlesworth -
Yea Channing will be guarding the 5s in the league but he is a very soft rebounder much like Amare. Combined the two are going to have very very off games in that department. If Earl Clark could maturate faster he would alleviate much of this because his fight is in the paint.

Thanks for the nice comment also
