Suns squeak into the playoffs with the guys we have. Over the summer Amare decides to not opt out. Grant Hill retires, and Channing Frye opts out of his contract because he thinks he is worth more. Suns sign someone using the MLE like Al Harrington, David Lee, Udonis Haslem, Brendan Haywood, Tyrus Thomas. Next season, certain teams will try and cut contracts and the Suns will have a huge expiring in Jason Richardson. Sacramento will struggle next season and realize Kevin Martin and Tyreke Evans simply don't make a good combo and Jason Richardson's contract will look super valuable. Suns make that trade.
Nash/Dragic
Martin/Barbosa
Clark/Dudley
Harrington/Amundson
Amare/Lopez

Don't have the math right in front of me, but I don't think we'll have enough room for a MLE type player, if the only money we shed is Frye and Hill's contracts.

Next season, the Suns have 62mil in payroll. Take away Frye and Hill and that is 5mil, so it leaves the Suns with 57mil in payroll. I'm not sure what the luxury tax threshold is next year, but if it remains at 70mil or even goes down to 65, the Suns should be fine.
Plus, if the Suns really did get Martin, his salary is lower than J-Rich, so that adds to it as well. If this exact scenario really did occur, the Suns would be fine financially.

They can only sign free agents if they're under the cap, if I'm not mistaken. They can only go over the salary cap and into luxury tax territory to re-sign their own players or thru trade.

amare on the Thunder... i think the Thunder is my second favorite team, so if anything had to happen, i'd be down for that. i think that would push OKC into 2nd best team in the west for the next few years.

No. That's why they have MLE. Just think about the Lakers. No way did they have ANY cap room to obtain Ron Artest over the summer.

You're right. My apologies. Still, not sure we could get someone like David Lee or Tyrus Thomas, since they were angling for upwards of $8m a year last year. Al Harrington or Udonis Haslem might be possible.

Suns are my team but I have to say I really enjoy watching some of the young teams - OKC, Memphis, Sac, Milwaukee and Minny - the last two I have never given a *** about. Lots of great young players in the league.
PTL just bores me though - I love LMA but the team itself, yawn.
And I have a weird fascination with NYC .....

OKC just seems to play with such passion. and now that passion is still there along with more maturity and professional basketball IQ. i hate memphis, but i do enjoy watching Mayo and Gay. they have a bright future provided they keep on the course they're currently on. Sac/Mil/Min, I don't really care about, but it's probably more digestible to be bad for a long time and then show sparks of life and hope. The Suns are on their downward slope now and it will take some time to adjust to being mediocre. I have to admit... I'm not from Phoenix, so I started watching the Suns when i lived in San Diego... I didn't watch basketball for maybe 8 or 9 years and i couldn't stand the Lakers/Clips/Kings, so I went with next closest team, plus i really enjoyed the Nash/Stoudemire duo. The Suns have become my team now, though, so whatever they do with their roster i will still watch. Growing up in CT, the Knicks were my favorite team growing up. I idolized Patrick Ewing. then i stopped caring about basketball and came back and hated the knicks. i've grown to kind of like them again, just secretly.

I started off a Lakers fan in the Wilt and Jerry days, lost interest in the league, came back in the Magic and kareem era, then the MJ years and really got back to it when Vancouver got a team.
God damn it

having Nash make the league was a big deal for us up here and then to have him turn into one of the a great ones was really amazing to see.
