What to expect from Robin Lopez?

Post#1 » by Knicksick » Thu Jan 21, 2010 2:59 pm

Hey guys I'm a knick fan and a fantasy team owner who has gotten an offer including Robin Lopez who has been playing well statwise the past 4-5 games. I just wanted to ask if you think he'll remain in the starting line-up and if his playing time is gonna remain consistant?

I'm expecting 28minutes 13points/7rebounds/2blocks-----is that too high or is it realistic?

How motivated are the Suns in developing him for the future (=giving him a lot of PT)....

Answers are highly appreciated...

Wow ---just checked that other thread: You guys are way down on him. Is he that bad and just on a fluke run because of Frye's non existant defense?Watching him in the past I thought he's a good defender and very mobile and agressive and has decent touch on offense but you guys make it sound as if he's absolutely horrific.

He's been horrible up until recently. Depends what you are trading away for him. He will continue this hot start until teams start scouting him and then his production will drop in 10 or so games. He isn't that bad, he just doesn't fit the Suns system too well.

I think your stat line is probably a pretty realistic ceiling. He has a nice jump hook, but he needs to develop a few more post moves to get his point average up. Right now, most of his points come on clean ups and some pick and roll.

I wouldn't say horrible..but his fouling will keep him out of some PT. He has potential, there's no denying that, but your numbers are a bit high. I'd say an average of 8/6/1-3(blocks). Obviously he can get anywhere from 2 - I'd even say on a great night 18 points. Eh.

Honestly, the only thing I would do with Robin Lopez in fantasy right now is sign him off of free agents. In the proposed trade, my feeling is that it must be a "sign and trade" - in other words, the other party could have signed anyone and thrown them in the trade. So I wouldn't calculate the trade's value using him too heavily.

There are just too many variables. His numbers have been good the last couple of games for sure. And yes, the organization does want to develop him. I hope I'm wrong when I say this but he is just still very raw. You can see the tentativeness (is that a word?) in his moves - plus, I think something may give on the Suns roster. You're not gonna necessarily keep seeing RoLo taking all of Frye's minutes - for much the same reasons we parted ways with Shaq.

I would say that something could go down on the trade market that would affect our frontcourt rotation - whether better or worse for Robin. There are Amar'e rumors, Frye is a movable contract and who knows, we may even be shopping Lopez. That said, I doubt we move him after he's shown what he can do.

So I guess my answer is basically, I have no clue  But with those variables and with the small sample size of games where he's actually done well, don't let him be the deciding factor in your trade. At the very least, stall for 5 games and see how he does and the minutes he gets. I think your predictions may be a bit high. I'm thinking more like 9 points, 6 rebounds and 1 or 1.5 blocks if he gets consistent minutes.

Lol I wouldn't stall. Its a low risk high reward type deal.

Low risk? I feel like risk is actually the biggest element here.

Whether or not to stall depends largely on the deal on the table. If we are talking a trade where Lopez's value is expected to be at a certain point to make the trade even, you cannot pull the trigger right now. Of course, if he is a throw-in that you don't care much about you can take the risk - but my argument against you Mr. Qwigz  is that the role of Lopez in any trade is a transfer of risk, rather than a grab-it-while-its hot situation.

Yeah I'm just thinking if it was a straight swap of Robin Lopez for someone else who has a similar contract, I can't think of anyone who has a contract similar to Lopez who has been on a hot streak as of late.

If he takes Frye's place in the starting lineup for the rest of the season he will probably get between 30-35 minutes a game

After last couple of domination from Lopez. I expect 18/7/ 2 blocks from now on. Anything less and I'll laugh.

And after EC's game earlier this season I expected 6 for 6 FG% but look how that worked out

Like how the Suns were sure going to win the championship and blow out the Knicks.

I am totally expecting him to go drop 5/4 a game now.

How does he not fit in the system? What is the Suns system anyways?
