The problem with fans right now is that they are fans of certain players rather than fans of the team.
People might have started being a fan of a certain team at its prime. Real fans stick with the team when it hits rock bottom; fake fans watch another team.
It seems like people are fans of certain teams because they're good rather than actually wanting to root for a team.

That's my biggest complaint about LA fans, and that might be the reason why I hate the Lakers so much.
Big city, loads of money, rarely drafts awesome players for their own use (although at times they do draft great players). It seemed like they are spoiled.
Most of my friends who happen to be Lakers fans started because of Pau Gasol.

Anyways, back to game 7, I was really disappointed when the Cs lost, especially when Sasha provided the icing on the cake.
Of the entire team, why him? I f--king hated him to the teeth. Had Mbenga been on the line I would have felt way better.

Btw, Mbenga is way better than Sky Hook and Wilt Chamberlain added up. Take my word for it.
MBENGA FOR MVP, DPOY and SMOY 10-11!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He can grab 200 defensive rebounds in a 48 minute game and score hundreds of points of a 120% FG% if he's given the playing time. Yes, 3pts at the basket and 1. That = 4 point plays in the paint. Yes, he's that great.

Exactly. There are a few smart ones.

Point is, Ron Artest saved them against Phoenix, played ridiculous defense on Pierce all series (their biggest scoring weapon), and had great games in Game 6 and 7.

When you say "real fans stick with a team when it hits bottom" etc, you're talking about fans who live in or near the actual base city, right?

Because honestly, I came on board after a number of years of not watching the NBA, because i tuend on to see what was going on in the playoffs and saw the Suns/Lakers series. I plain fell in love with the team and how they played, the unselfishness, the team concept, the open man, the way Nash orchestrated the offense.
I've been here ever since, thick and thin, and I'll be here for the Nash/Dragic era. But i can see how the team could trade away the players i'm invest in - which is all of them at this point, bar the guys at the far end of the bench

I'm a fan of the game, first and foremost. If there's a team that plays the game the way I like to see it played, I'll watch them

--- I kind of felt that way about the Sonics, since I started playing and watching the game in '70. They were the team that was closest to me in vancouver and I could hear the games on radio Bob Blackburn, Voice of the SuperSonics! - and watch them on KIRO 7, the CBS affiliate.

So that was my team for years - and the Lakers because of West and Wilt. But when they were gone I was a Sonics guy until the Magic and Worthy years, and i can't imagine anyone who loves the game who didn't love to see those Showtime teams play.

Then we got the Grizzlies and i was with them win or lose, and it was almost always lose. I didn't care - they were my team in my hometown. Then we lost them - a real shame because had they been managed decently we woud have been a very solid franchise.

Since then, I follow sets of players more than i do any team. I still have a soft spot for the Grizz though ...

so that's my point, anyway - un less you actually have a team near you that you can watch all the time or listen to the games,it's hard to be the kind of fan you call 'real'

I guess I can kind of relate to that in a way. No home team means you find other reasons to follow a team. I just didn't have a team to root for when I started watching the NBA. So I just picked the Suns when Barkley was traded to them, as he was my favorite player at the moment.

Since then though, I can't imagine being a fan of any other team. What I can do, is root for some teams I like. Like the 90s Knicks or MJ's Bulls. I so miss watching those teams.

But for the last 10 years i haven't found any player that I can sympathize with enough. So it's Suns or nothing now :(
