Nah, the past 5 years have turned AZ into the battleground against immigration. When i was growing up in PHX, Whites/Blacks/Mexicans/Asians, we all got along. Now i see hatred everywhere. Mexicans receive the most (even if they are American, just Mexican heritage). People just hate nowadays and certain politicians and media personalitys just make easy money pandering the hate and trying to instill fear.

Yes its bad nationwide, but like the sheriff, i too believe that Arizona has become a Mecca and a hotbed for this. :(

I have to agree with Kerrsed on this......

I was just at her office. There's hundreds of people there with candles. Nobody talked very much. Even the media people were somber - like they were still working through their own sadness, rather than just working. I took some photos (I'm a pretty avid photographer, just ask the DP'09 guys). It was ... I dunno. Nice. And sad. Deeply sad.

Preface to the political: I'm not interested in talking about your political beliefs, I'm talking about tone and a lack clear political reasoning.

<political>
As far as the assassin's politics go... he wasn't liberal, nor conservative. He was insane, and you can't ascribe any particular ideology to that, but he did absorb one thing: Hate.

Those whose profession is essentially to disagree with liberals (talk show hosts, politicians, et al.) are going to complain that the acts of one crazy person can't be blamed on their rhetoric. They are wrong. Leaders and public speakers must speak in a manner that recognizes that some of their constituents and listeners are insane. This is why Alan Grayson didn't belong in Congress. Rhetoric that pointlessly or inaccurately uses words like target, traitor, Marxist, etc., empowers the deranged. The Democrats' constituents had their share of Bush hatred back in the day, but it was confined to the margins because liberal leaders did not accuse him of being an "enemy of humanity" or "using Second Amendment remedies." As George Packer put it:
"Instead of 'soft on defense,' one routinely hears the words 'treason' and 'traitor.' The President isn't a big-government liberal—he's a socialist who wants to impose tyranny [...] This relentlessly hostile rhetoric has become standard issue on the right. (On the left it appears in anonymous comment threads, not congressional speeches and national T.V. programs.)"

Andrew Sullivan put it better than I could:
"When you put a politician in literal cross-hairs, when you call her a target, when you celebrate how many targets you have hit, when you go on national television and shoot guns, when you use the language of "lock and load" to describe disagreements over healthcare provision ... you are part of the problem."

Proves to me that politicians almost universally need to shape the hell up, because they're ridiculous.

Impulsenine - well said.

this man was, it seems clear, deranged - but that really isn't the point. The point is that America deserves a higher level of discourse than the gun-metaphor and hit-list debate that politics has devolved to. Free speech has a cost

What bothers me the most about this case is the talk of pleading insanity and possibly getting out of jail. Are you f'ing kidding me legal system? Insane or not, he killed 6 people, injured 18 and affected many lives in a terrible manner. Death penalty fits the bill regardless.

He wont get out. The death penalty is coming for him as one of the people killed was a federal judge.

I sure hope so. Make it quick too. A message needs to be sent IMO. Whats our death penalty method? Firing squad would be so fitting.

Hard to send a message to the insane - you never know what they'll receive.

also, Times has a story today about how it will be tough, post-Hinckley, to mount an insanity defense

True. but does an insane person methodically plan something like this out? That article was a good read though. It eased some of my anxiety of what might happen with the case after reading other less credible articles online.

No way he gets out of capital punishment by pleading insanity. He planned the whole thing. It was pre-meditated. The jury will not accept the defence on those ground. No way in hell.

Does anyone else think that the death penaly might be the quick way to go? I think they should chuck this fool in solitary for life without parole. Harsher penalty in my opinion... let him sit in his cell for 65 years waiting to die.
