In September, the U.S. Census Bureau said Arizona had the nation's second-worst poverty rate in 2009, behind Mississippi.

Census figures are catching up with the actual population trends. One could have guessed at this.

For this information to truly be valuable you would have to stratify the sample into two tranches. That, of course, would be politically incorrect but would give a more telling example of AZ's status on that list.

I know what you mean man, kind of a headscratcher though cause it's above plenty of southern, plains and rust belt states that you would assume would be worse off.

Why would it be politically incorrect?

Even if true take solace in the fact that the actual rankings are

53. Mississippi
52. (blank)
51. (blank)
50. (blank)
49. AZ

Nobody can catch Miss

It's in reference to the fact that AZ is going to be hit hard by the inclusion of illegal immigrants. I believe the even the census uses assumptions and projections. I would imagine, especially with everything that has been going on recently in AZ, that the Fed would attempt to hammer down in on a "true" number as opposed to just those who actually reported in at census.

And our school funding is dead last as well. This state sucks. I'm moving when the opportunity presents itself.

I'm assuming this is taking into account the hoards of illegals pouring into the state every year?

There would be a lot more jobs for Americans if Americans are electing to not underpay illegal immigrants and instead hire Americans. Just sayin...

and we do this via enforcing existing laws... and *gasp* passing state laws to reflect federal laws to help remove the source of the problem. Enforce the laws, quit calling them racist, fix the problem, and job opportunity goes way up. Imagine that!
