I think that's the best indicator that there's no longer any hope for humanity.

Hold out some hope. It is the youth that pushes these "temporary" stars into the lime light. Eventually they grow up and learn to appreciate real music. Both of my daughters moved out of the Britney/Spice Girl stage and thoroughly appreciate classic rock (Buffalo Springfield, Queen, Beatles). They both like Johnny Cash and I took them to see Garth Brooks in Vegas last year. They said it was the best concert they had ever seen. He covered a lot of Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Bob Dylan, and James Taylor.

I doubt we will ever see any of those five on this list

I was surprised to see Gaga and Swift on the list; but I could argue both of those ladies have significantly more talent (musical and song writing) than Bieber, Cyrus, Perry, Wayne, or Ke$ha. Of course iTunes is a game changer so we will see what the future holds.

The early 2K's, 90's, and 80's music was better for the most part, but there's still some cool ish coming out nowdays. The reason crap like Bieber or Miley lead the music buisiness now is cuz lil rich under-12 year olds are the only peeps actually buying music nowdays, everybody else downloads for free.

That being said, lets not forget the crap music from the 80's, 90's, and early 2K's either

Good music is everywhere. You just have to know where to look.

Now if you wanna talk about mainstream music, that's possible. Although people were saying the same thing in the past.

Lupe is OK, but I won't put him in the "good" category.
Kid Cudi, surprisingly, is a great artist. Very in depth. I love his content.

This is pretty much it. Radio was pushed under the thumb of MTV when the emergence of the visual medium came onto the scene. Visual aspects of an artist became as important as the music. Now the emergence of the internet has taken some of that power away from the music video (and music video channels now cater as much to reality shows, "celebrity" lifestyle as much or more then they do actual music these days).

Mainstream music for certain genres (rock, hiphop) are in a poor state of affairs, but if you're someone who enjoys well structured pop songs it's not so bad I suppose. Heck, just listen to the soundtrack of a mainstream product like NBA2K11 and it's not so bad.

Good music is out there. Just not so much on mainstream radio or TV. People are now going to music websites devoted to "indie" music or reading the multitude of music blogs out there, or just downloading & checking out music themselves. There's a lot of good music to be had if you just scratch slightly below the surface.

Anyways, music always goes in cycles and sometimes it is a reaction to the economic & social climate....I have a feeling kids in 10 years time will have another burst of inspired music to listen to. Me I'll be too old & listening to my old Nina Simone or Elvis Costello records or something hah. Oh listen to "Dj Honda featuring Mos Def - Magnetic Arts" if you haven't heard it before. Short but sweet.

The shame about most hiphopsters and rapheads is they seldom venture out of their comfort zone of listening. With Jazz, Alt Rock, Fusion, Funk (cant forget the funk), and even Big Band etc... there is a ton of music out there.

If you never have heard it, its 'new' right?

Just an observation

I think I just found a way to sum up this entire topic in 2 videos.

We went from THIS:

TO THIS:

Now, don't get me wrong. I think that making WATW25 and donating the proceeds to charity for the Haiti relief efforts was awesome, noble, and necessary.

But musically? Good lord...look at what happened in the past 25 years!

The guy with one of the best albums ever as his avatar speaks the truth.

If you depend on radio/TV to get your music, you're screwed.

If you can find your own path, no matter what kind of music you like, and you care enough to investigate and properly listen to music, you will never stop discovering new good music.

I like Lupe. His songs have meaning to them. That's why I'm a fan of Nas as well.

Lupe's Food and Liquor was pretty good when it first came out.
