Expansion Draft (Hypothetical, OT)

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Mon Jul 4, 2011 6:41 pm

This is pretty simple, and hopefully it will be a fun discussion during the lockout. If there were to be an expansion draft, what 8 players from your roster would you protect?

The rules:
1. Unrestricted free agents are not available to an expansion team to draft.
2. Unsigned draft picks are not available for the expansion team to draft.
3. Restricted free agents are available.
4. Each team must have at least one player unprotected, so if team x had 8 players under contract and 4 that were UFAs, it could only protect 7 players.
5. The expansion team can only draft one player from each roster and must have at least 14 players.

This is quite simple.

Nash, Gortat, Frye, Dudley, Morris, Lopez, Pietrus, Lawal

I would let any team that wants choose from Childress, Warrick, Brooks or Dowdell.

Chances are, teams hate what we haven't protected outside of Brooks and decide to not take anyone from our team (which I have no problem with). :D

1. Gortat
2. Frye
3. Dudley
4. Nash
5. Brooks
6. Pietrus
7. Lawal
8. Dowdell

You protect Brooks because he actually has value and can be a nice trade chip, same with Pietrus. Protect Lawal and Dowdell because they are cheap and have shown potential. Nash is a no brainer. Gortat, Frye, and Dudley are all bargains when looking at their production.

Everyone else is fair game. Chilly and Warrick are on bad contracts, Carter is done, Hill is UFA so he can't be drafted, same with M Morris. Siler is just a big used mostly for practice purposes. I think Lopez is done, its sad to say this early in his career, but back injuries can really hinder a player. He moves like a stick and has a verticle comparable to an elephant. He can't pass. He just doesn't have much going for him except his size. I wouldn't protect a player like that.

Brooks has value? Tell me what team is interested in him, especially when he's going to get a nice little long term deal this off season. Probably none. PG's that score with no defense are dime a dozen, every team seems to have at LEAST one. I wouldn't mind losing Dowdell, we haven't invested anything in him, rather protect Morris who was our lottery pick this year (and will be signed before an expansion team does occur, hypothetically).

Morris can't be signed until the lockout is lifted, and should expansion occur, it would likely be part of the new CBA (I'm assuming that's the point of this?)

Protected:
Nash
Gortat
Dudley
Frye
Pietrus
Brooks
Siler
Dowdell

Unprotected:
Lopez
Lawal
Warrick
Childress

2 guys coming off injury, 2 guys with bad contracts.

Nash
Gortat
Frye
Dudley
Brooks
Pietrus
Hill

Sorry, but you're failing hard if you value Lawal/Siler over Lopez.

You're failing hard if you're protecting Hill, who is an unrestricted free agent ;)

The short (and sad) answer is you keep as many of the current Suns unprotected as possible for a shot at some of the youth other teams may have to leave unprotected.

An expansion draft would trigger a full rebuild for the Suns. We would be stupid not to use that as an excuse. Play like crap for a year, draft well and sign a big FA, preferably a headlining PG.
