Bring back Westy?

Should we bring back Westphal in some capacity now that he's been fired? He seemed to do well here during the early 90's.

Sure - he can play the 2.

Right.

Of course he did well during the 90s. He had a team with Barkley (MVP), KJ, Majerle, etc...

Have you seen how he handled the Cousins situation? It's difficult to have young players buy into a coaching philosophy. I get that. But you have to really try in order to get multiple players to state out loud that the coach is so incompetent.

Man that would be a tough one. I love Westphal. Shooting against him at PV Mall back in the late 70s is what made me start to follow the Suns. He is the only guy that was part of both of our finals appearances (well who had any impact player/coach).

But he hasn't had a good track record as of late, and I am not sure he would do any better than Gentry, who I think sucks at everything but motivating Goran.

meh... i'd rather see him in a GM role. Barkley and KJ really made him look like a better coach than what he really was.

I actually like Gentry as coach he was a big part of our last playoff run. And he's always lookin so stylish in his suits, courtesy of the Clotherie!

I don't mind Gentry sometimes his rotations are weird but he is a decent coach we could do a lot worse. Westphal would probably be doing worse. The only problem I have with Gentry is he really doesn't draw up any plays or if he does he is terrible in getting the team to execute them heavily relies on Nash just making **** up and we are really bad in the clutch as a result.

^ Truth be told.

I actually am under speculation that it is Thunder Dan drawing up those plays for Gents. I always see him carrying around a clipboard.

Than Nevets - my pleasure

you know, I think Gentry is a pretty good fit for us. He's very good with young players and the older players like him, he knows how to let them do what they do but they still respect him from what I see. We have a bunch of guys like Hill, Nash, Duds, Gortat, Frye who are very serious about their game and push themselves, you don't need anyone to do it for them. Let gentry play out the string with this roster ... then, Kabooom, most likely

The original point was to bring him "in some capacity." Sure, he is around for long time...so he could make some positive impact. There's not a necessity in replacing Gentry (at least not replace Gentry with Westphal). Gentry will be there as long as Nash will. Once Nash is out, I'd be glad to see Thunder Dan take the role.

A lot of assitant coaches are carrying around a clipboard. But that doesn't matter as long as the one who says what to play is HC. Where is Gentry not good at...

Where to start...... How about last season where in multiple games he would take out a player that was on fire, wait fifteen to twenty minutes later to bring that guy back. By then the game was already out of hand, and the guy went cold rotting on the bench. He started VC for like twenty games, enough said with that one. He continued to make poor rotations throughout the year, and played guys sucking for way too long. This year, he waited until the opposing team went on a 19-0 run before making changes. The dude is inept, and if it wasn't for Nash, he would have the worst record in the league.

Now I think he makes a great assistant coach. He works well with the players and keeps a good relationship with them. He can motivate younger players. But he makes weak in game decisions, and at times keeps trying to get blood from a stone.

But I don't think we should exchange Westphal for Gentry either, and we don't have room in our staff for another coach. If we did, I would rather grab Hornacek.

Yep, that's right. I'm not saying that Gentry is a great HC, he isn't even good probably, but Westphal wouldn't improve our chances either. And there's more to dislike then Gentry's substitutions / reactions to what's going on. One for all is our really weird defense, which is somehow clicking last few games (still opens a lot of shots on 3pt line and in paint, though).

Still believe that as long as Nashy is running the show, Gentry has his place on a bench...
