OT - Moving from WI to Scottsdale

Post#1 » by Wilford Brimley » Mon Jan 23, 2012 7:39 pm

Sup Suns fans.

I recently graduated from college, and I might be moving from WI to Scottsdale for a job.

I have been to Scottsdale before, but it was only for a weekend, and was about 7 years ago.

Could you all tell me what it is like? From what I remember, it was very clean, upper class with a lot of wealthy and good looking people. But my memory could be poor.

What is the culture like? The weather? The people?

Thanks.

Culture is a bunch of rich people and Cougars

Weather is amazing but Summers Hot

People are stuck up but the truth is Old Town Scottsdale is amazing and the bar scene is good and there is a lot of good restaurants.

I've heard that people are stuck up and there are a lot of cougars from what I remember.

Not looking forward to stuck up people, and I'd love a cougar, but never succeeded in nabbing one. :(

If you are into the night life scene then your probably going to end up where mostly all the nightclubs and bars are which is in old town Scottsdale. On the other hand if you like golf, spring training games, going to the farmers market, etc then I'm sure you'll enjoy your stay in Scottsdale. You will encounter the typical Scottsdale snobs on your way but just keep some good company around you and everything should be gravy.

My buddy did that move from WI to AZ, so I'll ask him how did the transition. The toughest part will be the weather, and you will have to transition from winter to summer outdoor rec. if you are used to the lakes, there are a few good ones, if you have a boat. If you snow ski, you have very slim pickings in AZ, and some seasons completely suck.

Tempe used to have a great music scene, at least when I went to college, but many of the good places to hear music have closed down. I played in a few bands there, and it was awesome. Scottsdale is decent, and you are close enough to most things.

I would bring all your shorts, you'll probably wear them year round. And take a hair drier and blow it on your face on hot, and that will give you a good idea what a summer wind feels like in AZ.

There are a ton of people from Wisconsin that live in the Phoenix-metro area (Scottsdale-Tempe-Mesa-Gilbert-Chandler-Glendale-etc), so you'll like that when you go to Brewers (if you like them) games, Packers (if they ever come here, but I'm sure they pack, no pun intended, some bars during football season), but I don't think the Bucks have much of a contingent at Suns games.

Weather from October until about May is pretty awesome. Then it's hell. As much as our summers suck May to early October, I'll take the dry heat over the humidity elsewhere in the summers. Kiss your four seasons goodbye -- It's just summer and winter here.

Most of the Phoenix-area, not just Scottsdale, is pretty clean and nice. You'll love the night life in Scottsdale if you're into that.

The biggest adjustment is reversing your seasons. You can be outdoor and active 8 months a year but June-September dont do anything outdoors; its the mirror opposit you are basically snowed in for 4 months by the sun. You cant even play basketball outdoors at NIGHT; yes its that dam hot-were talking 122 during the day and 100 at night. Just stay in doors trust me.

If you want to know more about Scottsdale you should check out TheDirty website. That ish is hilarious, lol, but it's not everyone's cup of tea haha.
Just be careful, a lot of people pretend to be super rich and they're just materialistic. Oh, and if you play beer pong at a college party, make sure water is in the cup and drink from your beer can. Or else you can get herpes or something, lol. ASU is disgusting, but fun, be careful.

I just moved from Scottsdale where I lived for most of my twenties. It really depends on the type of person you are and the type of people you will associate with. I lived in South Scottsdale and did the whole old town thing for a few years, but once I got past that I realized it was a great place to live outside of that scene. The rich people are mostly up north, South Scottsdale is closer to PHX or Tempe as far as culture go but in old town the douches are unavoidable.

I would say scottsdale is among the best places for a young person to live, I prefer the dive bars but if you're into the whole club scene you know there are plenty of spots in old town. If you are not into bars its still a great place, It wasn't until I left Az that I appreciated how the cities were layed out and how easy they make it. I'm in North San Diego County now and It is quite a change...
