Dudley for Team Captain?

Post#1 » by Dragic13 » Fri Sep 7, 2012 12:25 am

The 33rd President of the United States Harry S. Truman once said of leadership, “progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better.” After an offseason that could best be described as a complete remodel for the Phoenix Suns, plenty of chances have emerged for leaders to surface and opportunities for change to be seized. The question is, who will step up and do it?

It’s something head coach Alvin Gentry says will have to happen organically.

“The thing I’ve always said to my teams is that I don’t think you can appoint a leader,” Gentry explained about his philosophies on leadership. “I think leaders will step up. We’ll see out of this bunch of guys who ends up doing that. I don’t think it’s anything I can do as a coach.”

While Gentry can’t appoint a leader, a logical candidate has emerged this summer and during the first few informal workouts on the US Airways Center practice court. Swingman Jared Dudley, who is entering his fifth season with the team, has the right amount of energy and experience in the system to step up. It’s a challenge he seems ready to embrace.

“Being a leader is natural to me,” Dudley said. “Sometimes you can do it different ways. For me I want to be a voice and consummate professional, be in the weight room and stay after practice. When things go wrong, that’s when you show your leadership. It’s easy to be a leader when things are going well.”

Dudley is no stranger to taking the reigns of a team. He had to assume that role in his senior season at Boston College. After Craig Smith led the team to a school best 28 wins the year before, it was Dudley’s turn to take charge. He answered the call as he was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. The impressive statistics earned him 2007 ACC Player of the Year honors, but it was his on court attitude and demeanor that most helped the team gel and earn a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Although he isn’t in college anymore, the Suns' offseason may be providing an opportunity for history to repeat itself. With the roster changeover now complete and only six players returning, he has another chance to step up like he did in his senior year. It’s an opportunity he won’t let pass him by.

“We’ve lost a lot of pieces, but we have a lot of talent,” Dudley said. “It’s going to be [Coach Gentry’s] job, with the help of myself and other key veterans, to help mesh it all together. That’s what I’m here to do. I’m here to bring a positive energy and be a guy to help people fit into their roles. That’s the key to the NBA, everybody finding their roles.”

That positive energy and desire to help his teammates hasn’t gone unnoticed by his head coach.

“Out of all of the guys here, there will be a leader to come out of this,” Gentry said. “Jared has a great opportunity to be that guy. He’s a veteran guy here. He’s been here long enough to understand what I want and what the expectations are. We’re going to ask a lot of these guys this year.”

In preparation for those new expectations and possible responsibilities, Dudley spent the summer working out with fellow NBA players in Las Vegas. He focused on his ball handling skills and getting his own shot off of screen and rolls. It is a skill he feels is key for any player who hopes to be playing come late April.

“Watching the playoffs, I saw every team that did well had numerous guys who could create their own shot off the pick and roll, so that was big,” he said. “I also tried to get in good shape so I could come back in that fourth quarter when shots are a little bit tired and get them to fall through.”

His biggest focus, however was on the defensive end of the court.

“Defensively I tried to guard all of the best players everywhere I went,” Dudley said. “Hopefully I can take on the that defensive role on our team of playing on the [opponents] best players.”

It’s not just the on-the-court skills and demeanor that makes for a great leader. It’s what they do off the court when no one is looking that is key, as well. Dudley has that covered, too. His concern for the community has shown through his help at local hospitals and schools in previous seasons, and he will be running a free basketball clinic for Valley youth on September 22 at Scottsdale Community College.

Will it all translate to Dudley becoming the leader of this team? Only time will tell. What is clear is the 2012-13 season marks a new beginning for the Suns and brings with it an opportunity for progress on the court. It’s up to Dudley whether he’ll seize the chance that the fresh start provides and become the man to lead that change or not.

I like it...one of my favorite players in the league not just on the Suns. 8-)

I think out of the group of guys we have at the moment Dudley would be an awesome team captain.

Yeah I have hard time seeing any of the new, young guys being the team captains. I'd guess there might be two and I would figure it would be from this group of players

Dudley
Scola
Gortat
O'Neal

Team Captains are usually part of the teams core, people that will be around for a while, and i dont think Scola or O'Neal are really part of our future plans.

I would say Dragic/Dudley/Beasley (in that order). PG's are usually the Captains, as their leadership is what is really needed to help run the team.

To me it should be Dragic, he will really take strides forward with it IMO.

Agreed. I think they will actually both be co-captains.

I think that unless the Suns either say otherwise or, we draft someone who is better or has more potential, or get an expensive free-agent Center, that we should expect Gortat to be in our long term plans. Based on years here, and performance Gortat, Duds, and Dragic are in the mix as team captains.

I'm with it - he eats that kinda stuff up. Would be quite alright with Duds as co-cap'n too though.

Since it's election time and all that...

A Dragic-Dudley would be a solid duo as this team's captains

Dragic/Dudley co-captains makes the most sense. I believe Nash/Hill were the co-captains the last couple of years so... ya.

New leaders will be key to success for Phoenix Suns

by Paul Coro - Sept. 10, 2012 09:20 PM
azcentral sports

When the Suns did not make a push to bring back Steve Nash and Grant Hill, so many things were lost besides the ultimate playmaker and the consummate defender.

Kendall Marshall lost a perfect mentor. Michael Beasley lost the ideal role model. The Suns lost their age-defying co-captains. The locker room lost 1980s pop-culture references, sunburned Canadian media and nauseating Duke blather.

Maturity, respect and leadership also departed for LA with Nash and Hill, leaving the Suns with a void of how to steer a ship of young cadets.

Leave that guidance up to Alvin Gentry and his aides, such as lead assistant Elston Turner, who is long overdue a head coaching chance, and Ring of Honor member Dan Majerle, who still outshoots most players. This team can go a season without a "C" by anyone's name until the title is earned.

The Suns do not have captains in the sense of Nash and Hill but they do have leaders despite only two roster players in their 30s, Luis Scola and Jermaine O'Neal.

Jared Dudley can lead the locker room. Goran Dragic can lead the offense. Scola can lead by example. Marcin Gortat can lead by performance. O'Neal can lead by experience.

Each player's leadership has some unproven ground. Dudley just became a full-time starter last season and might get some push from Wesley Johnson and Shannon Brown. Dragic had a fantastic March and April running the Houston Rockets offense, but must show he can do it for an entire season. Scola remains a top power forward but is making his first NBA move after his first statistical slight slip last season.

Gortat wants badly to lead, just as Amar'e Stoudemire once did, but still is learning. He sometimes threw teammates or coaches under the bus unknowingly or is oblivious on something like his declined request to wear No. 13 this season. O'Neal has accomplished the most of any player but little of it came in recent years.

It is not like Nash and Hill were barking at players in huddles and chiding them for a lack of hustle in practices. They just busted their tails on and off the court and carried themselves in the most professional way. When they spoke up, the room froze to listen. Their way created an expectation for everyone else to follow.

"I always thought I was a leader," said Dudley, whose three-year, nine-month tenure makes him the senior Sun. "Many times, through the course of games, I was more vocal than those guys. I don't know if I can talk more than I did. But if I can, I will.

"I'll do things more the Steve and Grant way. I'll be the guy who's always in the weight room and doing everything the right way. I'll do drills like Coach wants. I want to be the tight end for the quarterback -- a safety valve. In games, I want to be the one they can count on to do everything the right way."

So much is unknown about a team of mostly newcomers that it would be hard to even predict where leadership could emerge. Perhaps Gortat, the team's highest-paid player, has come more of age by leading his Polish national team this summer to qualify for Eurobasket 2013 with improving performances over an eight-game tourney. Maybe Scola takes command, just as he had the respect of his Argentine national team to be its Olympic captain over Manu Ginobili, Carlos Delfino and Andres Nocioni. Maybe the Year of the Dragon gets extended and Dragic continues his ascension that began as Nash's apprentice.

A different type of leader may be the most important. The Suns probably will be most successful if Beasley is their scoring leader.

All indications from the Suns media day interviews of the players seems like Jermaine O'Neal will be the voice in the locker room. Probably will be JO and maybe JD as captains. In Gortat's interview he made it clear JO has been the voice players are listening to over the past few weeks. In JO's interview you can see he's level headed and well spoken. Most of the players say they are surprised how good he is on the floor. Apparently the knee treatment in Germany went well.

This. Isn't there an unspoken rule that team captains are usually starters?

I think Gentry will label himself as a captain which will prompt an angry bunch of Suns players.
