Phil Jackson? (Not as a coach)

Just read an article about Phil Jackson not wanting the coaching job in Brooklyn - he is believed to look for a management role as you can read here:

No doubt he has one of the greatest insights to this sport so he could shake things up in PHX - only question I have - does he want to come here?

Just a thought, please don't start the whole "Jackson is overrated" stuff - it's just a discussion

It would be interesting but I don't think we can afford him. As long as Sarver is around we will keep hiring guys that just 'make do'.

Who's spot would he take? Sounds like he'd want either Babby or Blanks role. Maybe if he's willing to talk about such a position after the season when, if you believe rumors, one or more of Babby, Blanks and/or Gentry will be gone, then he and Sarver can talk. Sadly, I don't think Sarver is willing to pay the money it'd take to get Phil onboard and I'm not sure those two could co-exist. But, if we had an opportunity to snag him in some sort of management role, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Just to see Lakers fans freaking out would be worth the price alone.

If you think about it...Mike D'Antoni AND Steve Nash would be in Los Angeles, while Phil would do his thing in Phoenix - if you would've mentioned the pure idea of this happening a few years ago

I wouldn't mind talking about a possible coaching change. Kerrsed brought up Corey Gaines as a possible choice (not in words, but in picture. ). I wouldn't mind that at all.

When we departed with D'Antoni, I originally wanted Paul Westhead. Very similar style to Mike's, and Paul has a chip to prove it can work. Paul also used that style to give the Mercury their first chip, so he has PHX ties as well. He basically gave the valley their first chip in pro-basketball. Gaines played for Paul, and used Paul's style to help the Mercury get their second title.

If we were to go the tougher route, I would like to try Bill Laimbeer. He is tough, won a chip in Detriot as a player, and a WNBA coach, but that is if we traded some of our guys and used different players from the start of the post D'Antoni era (which could have been this season).

Followed up by Hornecek as lead assistant with either coach, and add either Ojajuwon or Kareem as our bigs coach. Decent staff, with tons of playoff experience as well as finals and chip experience.

Build a solid coaching staff.

Yeah. Always thought of him as the best possible choice if we change the coach next season. But I don't think he's what you call a perfect match for a rebuilding team.

It's tough to find the right guy for the job. I just liked how into coaching he seemed to be, when I watched him at the allstar break. The dude seemed liked he still wants to coach, and loves any chance he gets to do it. But he didn't seem like a pushover. He was tough but direct with his players, and he was just assisting I think. He actually might be the best choice for a rebuilding team. He has a ton of coaching experience, and really enjoys teaching the players, which might be great for a young team. Plus I don't think he would have a tough time getting the vets to buy in.

Sort of moot though, I appear to be stuck with Gentry until the season ends. If he hasn't been fired yet, I don't think it will happen. However, I still have my January 15th prediction. But if he is let go, Sarver will just promote Turner, which I think is fine for the rest of the year, but not a long term solution.

It's not about his coaching style because that's the reason why I beliebe he would be a good coach. But he's going to be 65 years old. If we get a new coach, I'd want someone that could lead that team through a long-term rebuilding process.

I'm not sure what would compel Jackson to come to Phoenix. It would be interesting, but it's not like they even have a few of the pieces that would make him believe that the team could run the offense he believes in and while the Suns are doing pretty well as far as recovering from the loss of two star-level players over the past 3 seasons, they aren't really positioned to contend any time soon.

And as others have mentioned, I'm not really sure the financial burden would sit well with ownership.

I would take PJ for the Blanks role on a second. Let him evaluate talent and let Babby manage salaries.

It would be a huge PR boost for the Suns bc PJ would become the face and draw attention away from Sarver.
