That's wrong, defense needs to be taught and I can't remember any guy coming out of college/high school that could already defend on a high level. I also don't think that Amar'e didn't care about defense I just believe that he lacks natural instincts and even BBIQ (on defense) to be an effective defender. Looking back at his time in Phoenix I didn't see many games where he didn't even try. Right now, Amar'e lost quite a few steps and I don't see any chance how he would become a better defender now in his 30's.

Anybody can play defense. Any basketball player knows that.

Standing Tall and Talking

Not knowing the full extent of the interview where his quote comes from, I'll cut him some slack. Actually, who really cares what he says anymore. He has become Mr. Irrelevant. The dude has had a disappointing career, considering how it started. Now he is an albatross contractually, with clipped wings. There is little for him to say, yet he is compelled to speak. A bad combo, especially in the land of baiting reporters. This wont be his last time he chews shoes.

Oh what could have been :sigh:

I really find this story hilarious. Amare has used the EXACT line before, back in November of 2010.

It was fair,” he said. “I was never taught defense. I just never was taught it in high school and also in the NBA…”

“I’ve got to give it to Alvin Gentry,” Stoudemire added. “He really implemented some strategies that were helpful to me. I took what I learned last year and carried it over to this year.”

Or this doozy from 2008

"I want to be Ron Artest," Stoudemire said, explaining the focus of his recent work on defense, along with efficiency in his offensive moves. "I want to be that guy you fear when you see him guarding you."

Maybe his real problem is he needs his memory checked. He supposedly learned it... forgot, was going to be the best at it... but wasnt.

But hey, its not his fault, he is 30 and no one ever showed him how to do one of his basic trade skills. And I really doubt there was ever any coaches, assistant coaches or players on any of his previous teams who could have thrown him a pointer. Poor guy.

I dont think people dislike Amare because he doesnt play D on a max contract. People hate Amare because he talks way too much about defense instead of letting his defense do the talking for him.

The sad thing he really could be a nice defender with his quickness-I still remember a Utah game where he got 10 blocks it was a clinic. Then he went back to just scoring the next game.

D'Antoni's response was classic.

Amare doesn't play defense A) because he isn't very smart, and can't figure out the footwork needed and he also turns his head on the shot instead of boxing out his man. B) because he doesn't want to have any contact with other players knowing that he could get injured.

Rundog I just dont understand how you know so much about defense without having multiple NBA coaches fail at teaching it to you like Amare.

The saddest thing is if you threw a Louis Vuitton scarf around Amares defensive assignment he would be all over the guy.

That's because I pay attention, and care about being better at basketball.

I think if you pinned a movie script to the opposing player, Amare would be all over him as well.

These are the things that PISSES me off about the guy. We've all heard it a thousand times. "I want to be the most feared defender in the NBA....Blah Blah Blah." He always says this a.) during an offseason and b.) just as he's returning from injury.

Shen he shows up on the floor and basically sucks on the defensive end....and runs back to the excuse that "nobody taught me out to play defense." derp derp.
