Also, Phoenix is a Suns town. The Cardinals are getting better and a generating some buzz, and the D-Backs are the only AZ franchise to win a championship in any sport, so there is still a lot of interest there. But when the Suns are winning and the pundits and fans think we have a chance to win things, it's a Suns town.

Good try but university of phx stadium sells out every time for the last 7 seasons for the cardinals and that's 60,000 plus people attending each game. Plus That's around 70 straight sell out games. Suns don't have a current sell out streak and are currently lucky to get around 12,000 to attend a game. Obviously u were in a hole somewhere when the cardinals went to the Super Bowl. It was freaking crazy.

Not trying to argue about a dumb point but the cardinals own phx and Arizona. It all started when bill bidwell handed the keys to his son. Anyways back to the crazy party when the suns win. It will be crazy.

Update: I just googled most popular sport in Arizona. Well I was wrong its the diamond backs.

A group of us said we're going to flip the lightrail if we ever win....

But realistically I will probably get insanely drunk and dance in the streets for a solid two weeks.

Mr. Goldschmidt might have something to say about that. I do agree Larry is the most popular but Goldy is not that far behind.

If the D-Backs are the most popular sports team in Arizona, than Arizona is in trouble,

As evidenced by the embarrassingly low amounts of fans that show up. 19th out of 30 teams in the MLB in 2013, but only a 56.3% occupancy rate at home for a team currently leading their division too.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance

Say what you want about the Cardinals, but they pack their stadium. In 2012 they were 27th out of 32 teams, but had a 96% occupancy at home. The low rank is primarily based on stadium size.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/attendance

I know its hard for many to accept, for some reason, but Phoenix is turning into a Cardinals town.

And I'm sorry, but I can't take that CBS Sports blog on most popular teams seriously at all because of this
Washington (MLB/Mariners)
Biggest MLB City: Seattle

Seattle is clearly, 100% clearly, a Seahawks city for at least a decade now. The Mariners haven't been popular there in ages.

If the Dbacks played only 8 home games a year they would probably sell them out too. Trying to compare baseball and football average attendance is about as revealing as trying to compare total figures.

That CBS survey is from 2008 though, before the Cardinals Superbowl run and also immediately following the Dbacks NLCS run in 2007. So its not surprising to see the Dbacks at the top.

Well, if that's the case and recent success drives that survey...

The Mariners in 2007-2008 were 61-101, last in the AL West and second worst record in the majors.

The Seahawks were 10-6, won the NFC West, and advanced past the first round

Yet, the CBS Sports survey somehow suggests that not only are the Mariners the most popular team in Washington, but Seattle/Washington are the "biggest" MLB city/state as well?

Sorry, but that survey is a useless pile of you-know-what, they probably just picked teams at random to determine their results.

"Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics"

EDIT : Sorry for hijacking this thread OP, I still hope for a Suns championship in my lifetime, but the present situations obviously does not look good for our franchise.

Actually the Mariners the year before this came out went 88-74. Yes, the Seahawks have a loud crowd (largely due to the architecture) that sells out... but at the same time the Mariners have had loyal support through nearly a decade now of struggles. But I cant speak for Seattle fans.

But I was more referring to the Cards-Dbacks end of it. The Cardinals were the black sheep of the city for ages, a horrible franchise with a horrible owner. The only recent notoriety they had around the time that survey was done was the "THEY WERE WHO WE THOUGHT THE WERE" rant. I would have been shocked if any poll had them as the most popular team in town until that super bowl run.

I also think some people dislike baseball so much and that they dont realize how popular the game really is. They see the half empty stadiums and assume the league is struggling, but they play in giant stadiums and play 162 games a year, they still draw larger crowds than every NBA team in twice as many games. The league hauls in nearly 8 billion a year annually, it is undoubtedly the most popular sport somewhere.

Sad but true. Suns went from rulers of arizona to third in the peeking order! I still remember u couldn't go anywhere in az without seeing something suns related. It's just not that way anymore.

Did you know the cardinals are worth 991 million dollars according to Forbes magazine. That's crazy. Nfl just about rules the United States. They are clearly the big boys on the block.
