There is ALWAYS a market for a solid 15/10 center who is the top of his game and isnt a headcase or walking injury waiting to happen. He only played 30 vs the normal 36 minutes a starter typically would get last year which is why his stats werent as good...and to be fair he plays harder when the team is truly trying to win. All that being said he still averaged 11/8.5/1.6 blocks per game last year even with the shortened minutes, some lingering injuries and not much talent around him or a system suited towards centers.
Everyone keeps treating Gortat like he has the value of a below average backup swingman. This is a proven top 10 starting center; he may not have Cousin's athleticism or Gasols strength but I feel he does very well with what he has, plays both ends and is very consistant.
Really the market value is dictated by demand. So how many teams really need C like Gortat at the moment on a last year of his contract? I see only Maverics, Pelicans and Thunder as a realistic options. Maybe Philly or Atlanta also could be options, but considering they are rebuilding, it seems unlikely. Of course we could always trade Gortat to Celtics for Gerald Wallace's nightmare of a contract, but who needs that...
More options should open up during the season with some injuries or disappointing performances, so keep him for the moment, as his value around the league at the moment might not be that far away from that average back up swingman you talked about.
You hit the nail on the head, the market value is dictated by demand.
And im sorry, mybloodisorange, i dont see him as a top 10 starting C. He's somewhere in the top 20-25, but no where near top 10.
The problem is that he is in a contract year. So he's a 1 year rental. His contract is good right now, but he will demand alot next summer. Too many teams have been burned lately by trading for better than average players in the final year of their contracts. See DHoward, KMart, etc.
