I wonder if some GMs flat out tell their coaches: "lose this game". In this case, probably the difference between 3rd and 4th worst isn't that dramatic for a GM to do that. If it was the difference between keeping their pick(like the Lakers) or not, then it made total sense to "lose games".
I guess a GM has other ways to telll the coach "tolose". He can make a decision to "evaluate" some guys from the D-League, 10 day contract guys... the Nets who don't own their pick, did that, shutting down their two best players. Maybe in this case, it was just too difficult to tank... there are some bad teams in the league and you inevitably will win a game or two, unless you're the Nets.
Still, this is a bit crazy. The Pelicans are bad... but they've been in games lately and have won a few as well. Not only do they lose... but by 21. Jeez. I'm going to root for the ping pong balls to fall in your favor, but this is head scratching to see them hurting their chances to pick higher in the draft, if the Celtics end up with the #1 pick, this will look really bad.
