Why would the Blazers not extend Stotts? Because he can't beat the Dubs?

I dont think he is assisting anyone. I think Vogel can call his shot. He could pull a Thibs, sit out a year, and get the premium job next offseason.

Got to be Houston if he is looking to coach next season. No way he goes to Sacramento. Unfortunately, I doubt he would have come to phoenix either had we not moved so fast on Watson.

NY seems to make the most sense. I'm surprised guys like him and Stotts didn't get extended earlier. Chances are they both stay where they are at though.

So Vogel is not getting an extension... :o If the Blazers don't extend Stotts I'd say we pay Watson whatever it takes for him to 'happily' accept an assistant role and give Stotts 35/5 years.
A fan can dream...

You like Stotts better than Vogel? I can't believe Vogel is available.

Neither can I. Tbh I would be perfectly happy with both of them. I think they have both done a fantastic job with both their 'strong' and 'weak' rosters, which is huge IMO.

Watson was the right choice.

-He wanted the job
-The players like him
-The players responded to him
-He didn't command a huge contract.
-I wouldn't want to throw big money at a college coach in hopes of him making a rare successful adjustment.

While I find some of the things Watson says and does a bit "preachy" or "corny" some of the greatest head coaches in basketball had some type of "religion" in their coaching strategy. Afterall, Phil Jackson was the 'Zen master."

Watson seems to know how to connect with people and that's huge. The fact that he was able to connect with our players in a way that they obviously didn't mind given their exit interviews is great.

I think today's players need a younger coach that had an NBA playing career and can relate to them.

I'm not sold on him as an X & O type guy. I think that there were better options for that. But that's where assistant coaches can come in.

We need Watson to lead and he's shown he can do that.

With the twins long gone, our leaders will be Watson on the bench and PJ/Chandler in uniform. I wouldn't mind adding another high character vet or two this offseason to make sure our young guys get the best experience possible. Maybe Mira and Price fill that role.

So, the Suns hire there coach without interviewing anybody else

Joerger fired today
Vogel fired yesterday

I like Earl Watson but why not talk to a guy like Mark Jackson at least. I get Monty Williams is going through a lot personally.

But there was ZERO need

Maybe management knows we're not competing for the playoffs a couple more years so they don't see the need to hire a big name coach and maybe a big name coach wouldn't want this job?

Joeger and Vogel are both amazing option for the Suns. I like Watson fine but both of those coaches are experienced winners who can coach defense. They seem like the kind of coaches who are able to build a quality culture. Always felt that they needed to let the process play out a little bit but it's clear that they moved too fast.

I'm still surprised we went with Watson so early and without interviewing any other candidates. Not saying we wouldn't still have ended up with Watson but it does feel like we should've done our due diligence on other potential candidates first.

Kings getting Joerger after interviewing all of those horrid coaches just made me cringe.
This is a very good movement for them.

Watson was on with Bickley today and talked about working out Booker at UCLA with baron Davis, said Knight was still working at least an hour a day already too.

So. How about Watson hiring Zeljko Obradovic as his top assistant? Wonder if the Suns could pay him enough to lure him here.

I think the former HC of the Canadian Olympic team

I also think the former HC of the Raptors

Not sure if I like it or not. Watson needed a full time assistant so glad he got one

I know this much - the Suns will be as good as the GM makes them

I like it a lot, to me it seems like a good idea to surround a first year head coach with experienced ex-Head coaches, and all the salty ass Blazers fans on Twitter just make me feel even better about it lol. I'm pretty sure he was an option for our head coaches position at one point too if I remember correctly?

Watson has been surrounding himself with some experience on the bench, first Bob Hill(since gone) and now Triano who was a former NBA HC as well.

This smacks as a setup to lineup Stevie franchise to come back in a few years when we have vets. Triano takes over, McD moves aside and PHX becomes CAN south.

Took me a while to find this thread, but anyway, if anyone thinks Earl Watson is not good, just know I said it here first, almost 8 years ago.
