DA needs to get back that mid range j he had before. Allowing the opposing C to back off this much basically takes away cutting lanes for the wings.
This is why some of us have been wanting him to shoot 3s since his rookie year. Make defenders actually have to guard out there and it opens things up for everyone.

If ayton could shoot 30% from 3 we would be a championship team. But also, we still may be and he doesn't need to be. That sag off isn't asking for a 3 though, that's a free throw. And last year he was hitting those like layups. His shot went to ****.

I think he's been told to stop shooting that **** dumb ass 'middy'. On a play like this it's an OK shot but if it has to be all or nothing with him shooting mid range I'll take nothing.

I think the issue leading to be told to stop shooting that midrange J is that he got way too comfortable firing away. The guy doesn't have the skill set or the motivation to put the ball on the floor to get a better shot or draw the foul and there was a time where every 2nd possessions he gets at that elbow or FT line, he's shooting the damn thing. And while he was having some moderate success, he's not shooting at high enough efficiency there to make it worthy possessions. If he took a step back and made it a 3, whole different story.

I would prefer he go right at JV and try to draw a foul. Or drive and kick to a shooter if help comes.

Is that the play where he dribbled behind his back and took it straight to the rim for a finish?

Midrange or drive with aggression and draw a foul. Can you imagine that type of defense to Amare? Even centers in today’s game would absolutely make JV pay for that. Ayton set his mind to run the play and that’s the problem. He reacts to things way too slow.

I guess this play was against the Pacers...should have just done this again.

In the JV situation, I'm pretty sure JV would've drawn the easy charge watching DA barrel down the lane. The play in the Pacers' game, the lane was open with no defender and he just needed to get by his man who was terrible out of position.

That was in the Indy game.

Yeah I was very impressed with that play Ayton made in the Pacers game (hope to see more of it because 99% of the time he would draw a foul or finish or both).

But in this case, JV would’ve easily drawn the charge as he was completely sagging off him. Ayton isn’t gonna euro step past him like Harden or Doncic. The only big that can maybe make that play is Embiid and that’s it. The jumper would’ve been the right play here.

Yeah his mid range jumper was money since even his rookie season. But it somehow became very flat over time.

I think it’s because he jab steps way too much. Maybe he watched a lot of Kobe highlights when he was younger but the jab only works when you are a major threat to drive as well. Ayton jab stepped and still took the jumper a vast majority of the time so the defense isn’t gonna suddenly back off to respect the drive.

On plays like this one where he’s completely wide open, he should just catch it and shoot without any jab step whatsoever.
