I think "slow mo" is on the right team to maximize his talents & that he'd not be the same player here.

I do not think that is the case at all. We need a big man but not necessarily a stud.
If it is a choice between Doncic and Ayton I think Donic is the right choice in todays NBA.
Who are the impactful big men in these following cities. They are all considered championship contenders.
Golden State
Houston
Cleveland - They just loaded up on wings and have improved a lot.
Boston
I think you have to go with Doncic or Young if either are available with our pick. Hopefully one of them will be available.
I would draft the best big available with the Miami pick and sign a big in free agency.
We will see what Payton does the rest of the way but at first sight he is better than advertised.

Well too be fair, GSW has allstars at 1-4, so it’s tough to use them as an example.

I would not mind a group of
Booker
Jackson
Warren
Doncic
On our roster to start next year. I think folks are Saying Donic can play 1 - 4. I have little faith in Chriss but Bender has shown some life this year.
It certainly will be interesting to see what pick we actually get this year and what we do with it.
Hopefully next year we are discussing playoff match ups not what type of tank we want to drive.

You guys realize that we will be over the cap this summer and have only the MLE to spend, right?

Durant, Klay, Dray are All in the top 15 best defenders roughly.

That's only if we keep all our cap holds and opt into everyone. Neither are likely. For instance, if we just relinquish our rights to Len we are immediately back under.

McD was on Arizona Sports three days ago and said the Suns are among 5-6 teams Lakers included that’s projected to have lot of cap space this summer.

I think I calculated $29m to the soft cap and $51m to the luxury tax for 3 players after guaranteed contracts and our first round pick. Where it could be important getting Payton is that we have his bird rights so we can sign him last over the cap.

Doubt it b/c Payton is probably getting less than his cap hold, meaning it may be better to sign him before.

Re: Season Speculation, Trade Ideas & Discussion Pt. 6
Spoiler:
There isn't any kind of restriction on a trade like that unless the player has bird rights. As Dedmon is concerned, I'm fine paying him a large salary for one year if that's what it comes down to.
Jordan would be the ideal candidate for the one year "here is all of our cap space deal". But if the Suns draft Young or Donkic, Jordan opts in, Capella extends with the Rockets, AG signs an offer sheet with Mavs and Jabari with the Bulls, then there is a limited set of options left for the Suns.
And if I am the Suns and in desperate need of a starting caliber center and left with Favors, Nurkic, Len, Lopez, Noel or Dedmond all willing to sign for either 4/$36 million or a one year at $20 million (or sit on the space hoping for someone to trade into it along with a first), Im probably taking Dedmon.
His TS% is over .600 each of the last three seasons and he is shooting .380 from three on two attempts a game. He is mobile, can defend the rim and guard the perimeter, he runs the floor well and has shown some good passing ability this year in particular. He is the kind of center I want this team to have.
In the end I think the Suns could get him on a one year deal for $10-$15 million given the tight market and I like that idea - if a multitude of other ideas fall through first.

Probably would fit really well next to Bender. One year and $22M would he bite? Does it even make sense to go after him for a couple years as a replacement for Len?
Dedmon signing a one year contract at $22M? It is toooo much...he is not getting that money even on a three year deal.
I would be OK signing him as a backup C (if we can trade Chandler and Len is gone) if we draft one of Ayton/Bamba/Bagley/JJJ because he is really active defensively and he is in his prime. I like him, he can occasionally start too.
But he is a role player who is not gonna get more than $10M per year in the market IMO.

the team still has Chandler and Sauce... not to mention Bender and Chriss who can slide at center as last resort.
So if Suns are going to use that max cap space... it better be for Paul George.... assuming Cousins is staying at Pelicans.

Chandler is done. He can't play more than 50 games in the regualr season, he needs treatment every single day. Imagine him NEXT season...I can't even think about it. We need to try to trade him, but is gonna be really difficult without adding picks.
I expect us to agree on a buyout before the start of the season. We can save a couple of millions, open a roster spot and he can play (if he doesn't think about retirement) on a contender as a backup/third string C.
Dudley is on a similar situation. He can't play anymore, at least if he is not motivated. I would be OK with having one of them (Dudley OR Chandler) on the roster for veteran's influence, but not both.

Good point his cap hold is $10m.

I am a fan since college. I like his passing ability, mid range game and his basketball court awareness.
But he is a RFA, he is not a good shooter and he plays SF...so i don't think he is a great fit here. If he could play PF for us...probably, but I am not sure about it.

Kerrsed wrote:bigfoot wrote:Suppose Payton continues to play like he did tonight against the Nuggets. What would you pay him??
As little as we have to on a 4 year contract (3 Guaranteed + 1 Team Option).
Isn't that the idea for all players?

" Hello, Suns player! We would like you to resign with us for as much as possible, otherwise known as the Max. How about it, son!?"
I know what you are saying though; he's an RFA this summer, and really, depending on what/if he finds on the market will kind of decide his fate with us.
But man, it's a tough call. He's got to start shooting some 3s. We can't have Booker being the only threat out side. Now, if Bender does well, and shows more of this 'instant development' he just showed (and IF that was due to Payton in any way?? Umm, sign now!), and can drain 3s, say 6-8 atts/game, and if JJ picks up his stroke in the off-season to become AT LEAST a 35% shooter on about 3-4 atts/gm, then sure, Payton can continue attempting a couple shots per game from outside, and he'll fit in fine.
But did you notice all those "IFs" I had in that statement...that's the problem. Plus, it depends on who we draft. If we draft a Stretch-Big, I'll call it, early, then that may also help alleviate issues with Payton.
But if we've found a PG that dishes 7-8 assts/gm, scores 15, shoots a couple treys a game at, at least 35%, and has shown the ability to play D AND has the physical makeup TO play D? I say call it good and move on to fixing our Bigs...

Len is renounced - 8m
Payton signs for less than 9.8m - savings; QO is only 4.6m -my guess, between 7-8 me so lets call that 2m in savings. If he leaves altogether, that's 9.8m
if the Heat pick is traded - another 2m
tyler ulis -1.5m, not guaranteed
depending on who you draft =- you can trade Chriss or Bender possibly
I can come up with 15 t 17m in a sign and trade. all the while not stretching Knight too early and not using Chandler, Dudley, Sauce or Daniels unless Paul George wants to come to town. I want to hold those four expiring contracts for the summer of 2019 if the team can. The Suns, SHOULD be able to get a solid play for 15 to 17 in this market. And if nobody wants Chriss or Bender, well there are still other assets - the Bucks pick to trade with the Heat pick. My guess, if the Suns sign Gordon to an offer sheet - a sign and trade might look good to the Magic to get assets like Chriss, the Heat pick, the Bucks pick .
I think the Suns can be smart with their money but still go get a player that will help them. I look at a team like the Hornet -- if all else fails - would a player like Marvin Williams be a good two year stop gap, Michael Kidd Gilchrist - as either one of those deals could probably be had pretty cheap -- meaning Tyler Ulis and the Bucks pick and the Suns absorb the contract. Just a veteran to help the team while still maintaining cap flexibility for summer of 2019

If we bring Payton and Gordon in, and draft Ayton, are we very different from the current Magic team that has been struggling with the Payton/Gordon/Vucevic lineup for years?AtheJ415 wrote:Also, pending our draft selections (say we take Ayton and somebody like Robert Williams or another big slips and we take them with the Heat pick) and Cousins's health (and NO offering the super max) Gordon is the guy for our offseason imo. He fits the team. He fits the style of play. He fits the age grouping. He is super versatile and a great athlete with athletic upside and skills that he can still improve on. He went to school at Arizona so knows the state and has fans here, and probably would like to get closer to home. He is also capped out at the mini max and Orlando's GM making him available for trade clearly signals that either they aren't prepared to give him the money he wants or else they just prefer Isaac and see him as a 4 going forward. Either way, he is the best fit of the next group outside of the superstars (Lebron, George, Cousins). That said, I still think it is probably a better idea to save some of that cap space to ensure we can offer a super max the following offseason, because our pick this year, Booker, Jackson, Warren, and Bender, and our stash of future picks should be a good selling point to any star that offseason that we will be good going forward.
Parker also might be worthwhile but I am not sold on him quite yet. Same for Capela depending on money.
This lineup is super athletic and versatile going forward, though TJ obviously has to fit somewhere or transition to 6th man.:
Payton
Booker
Jackson
Gordon
Bender
Adding Young, Doncic, or Ayton to it still works due to the versatility of the others like Jackson and Bender.
