Just imagining...
Dragic/Bledsoe/Lebron/Pau/Plumlee
and a nasty bench mob of Frye/Green/Morrii/Goodwin/LB/Len

If Pau is willing to play 15 minutes off the bench, I'm cool with it. However, if we were to play Pau 30+ minutes a night with our main group, he would kill our offensive philosophy and slow us down way too much, basically killing this team's biggest strength

I don't see Pau being a significant pull for free agents.

LOL, how do you figure that?

FYI: the Lakers are third in the league in pace. Yes, ahead of the Suns.

Luring Lebron to Phoenix with Bledsoe/Dragic is good, but luring Lebron with Bledsoe/Dragic and Pau would be hard for Lebron to turn down. Especially with our role players, who are far better supporting cast than the Heat IMO.
IDK just a thought.

Not sure if serious :/

Pau isnt going to space the floor like Frye can (who I believe is one of our most important players,) and as I said, he will kill our flow. I highly doubt he would fit well in our system.

If Pau was to come here, he would play PF and Pau's days as a PF are long gone. The reason why the Lakers can play with high pace is because Pau is their center. Oh and by the way, yes their pace is high, but have you seen their record? Horrific.

Dont even get me started on Pau's defence... which is possibly worse than Frye's. I'ld rather save Okafor's expiring and hope that we can actually find a nice long term solution, instead of a stop-gap, washed up Eoru.

Why would Pau play power forward?

One has nothing to do with the other. That's a logic fallacy my friend. The Lakers are horrific because most of the players the play are waiver wire material.

Look, I'm not trying to convince you that you should want to trade for Pau Gasol. I'm just pointing out that just about everything you've claimed about possibly acquiring him is...well...wrong.

Just like he did last year with Dwight Howard and Steve Nash?

Adding Pau doesn't even guarantee we would get to the playoffs. He's not a difference maker anymore.

Pau's on/off court stats this year:

Lakars are as good (bad?) on offense with Pau on court as they are with him on the bench and are significantly better on defense with him on the bench.

I number your responses so it's easier to reply.

1. Why would Pau play Power Forward? Well.. are we seriously going to bench Plumlee and make Len benchwarmer? What other options are there? Even at PF, he's taking away minutes from Frye, and Markieff, who has been balling. If it was my choice, I would rather he not play at all, i.e dont even trade for him.

2. Yes it does. If the Lakers are playing at the 3rd best pace in the League, and arent transferring to wins, that means something isnt right. Sure alot of factors can contribute to that, and Pau playing in a system that does not utilise post ups is one of them. Did I mention that the Lakers are DEAD LAST in the league in allowing points in the paint, at a whopping 48.5 per game?

3. Well that's what makes a Forum a Forum isnt it? ;)

Just like Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee couldn't help Indiana last year? Just like Goran couldn't get the Rockets into the playoffs the year before he returned to Phoenix? I would have thought this season would have taught us to look deeper below the surface into a player's value than what your question would suggest that you're doing.

That seems like a somewhat lazy argument. Last year was hardly on Pau Gasol. That was a terrible mix of players, poor coaching, and devastating injuries. Last year's Lakers team is hardly comparable to the kind of environment Gasol would coming into here.

Adding Pau doesn't even guarantee we would get to the playoffs. He's not a difference maker anymore.

Well, I think the Suns are making the playoffs as they're currently constituted. Add Pau Gasol, and I don't think we get worse.

Moving Plumlee to a backup role isn't the end of the world for me, and Len could still get his token 6 mpg.

Well that's what makes a Forum a Forum isnt it? ;)

Then the answer is still, no. The extra profit per playoff game is about $1Mil.

You know how much Pau makes? $19 f'n Million. Okafor makes $13M, 80% of which is paid for by insurance. So we'd take on an extra $6Mil towards the cap, And, if we use 41 games as the cut off where Pau is still owed half his salary, we'd be out of pocket a total of roughly $8.2Mil more than we are if we do nothing. So... we lose money. A lot of it. If your aim is to bring in extra revenue, then I'd steer the hell clear of Pau Gasol.

Well I don't think it would just be an issue of the financial benefit; I think a significant motivator would be re-establishing the franchise brand. A playoff series win would go a long way towards doing that.

I love Noah but he's so expensive. Elite rebounder, great passer and an underrated athlete.

I'd try to work something out with Okafor and the twins including a 3rd team adding a wing athlete.

Hear that McD, easy as 123...

Of course this is a consideration, but I don't think this story even floats out there if Sarver hasn't signed off on giving up the financial benefit of having insurance cover Okafor's salary. Woj had to have gotten this leak from Phx to see if we could entice a team in giving up something to help our team with a playoff run.

I doubt Pau is the first choice, but I also know Sarver looks at any extra playoff home game as an extra million in his pocket, and also is always REALLY optimistic about what our team can do. I'm guessing McD said "look, we are saving money on being $5 million under the cap, so this is an extra asset we can float out there to see if anyone bites on giving up someone who can help us make a run." Sarver has proved to take on extra money for older, over the hill players too, like trading Marion for an over the hill Shaq who had an extra year on his contract at $20 million.

I'm not saying they are targeting Pau by any means, but I'm guessing they floated this story out there for one reason or another.

I've been watching Pau quite a bit this year and he's really regressed. He's got a lot of miles on him, all those deep playoff runs. His defense is really, really bad. I mean, I think Pau moving here WOULD work and it might even win us a series...

But long term? I'd rather THIS team have their shot and go through the growing pains themselves. If we get Bledsoe back and he's even 80% of himself, it' gonna be a hell of a ride...we're gonna find out who our guys really are.

I'd trust Mcmiracle to make the right/necessary moves in the offseason. Throwing assets for Pau? It seems like something Sarver and his yes-men would have pulled the trigger for.

Nah, the former regime would give up the Suns pick and sign Pau to a contract extension.

I wouldn't equate giving up the #30 pick in the draft to "throwing assets" for Pau.

I agree. I wouldn't throw any assets for Pau other than the Okafor contract and likely wouldn't keep him past the season. He has been playing better lately. I think he could help with our young bigs with post moves if he had the patience to mentor at all. He has been one of the best post up guys in the league for years. I wouldn't keep him past this year, but it's a guy that might have a decent influence on the bigs, and if we don't give any assets, I wouldn't mind it. I would have never thought so before tonight, and I don't even know if the Lakers would do it because they have so much tv revenue, but that 4 out of 5 years kick in on the tax might make them feel like they could dip under (again, I'm not sure if this is even the case with their cap situation) but if it is, maybe they do it.

I don't even know if McD would even want Pau though. He doesn't seem like the guy he would want. He's probably targeting someone we may not have considered yet.

Since I'm late to this second Pau Party, I'll just put out there some random thoughts:

1.- At this point Pau is a C who may could play spare minutes at PF. I could see him sharing time with any of the bigs we have other than maybe Len.

2.- He still has enough left in the tank to be a difference maker for us, it is, a team who is in the business of winning, that sorely lacks post scoring and who could use more defensive rebounding.

3.- Acquiring him would require the Lakers getting something they covet. A late first round pick is the obvious candidate, and I believe it's fair value for a still productive center in the context of a playoff push, even if it's just a rental.

Since this is RealGM, you'd see how it's needed a second rounder and cash coming to the Suns to make it a perfectly balanced move value wise, but I think that's not how it works in reality.

Of course, if at the deadline they bite for two second rounders, all the better, but losing Indi's pick wouldn't preclude me from pulling this trigger if it absolutely came down to it.

Of course, any other first round pick would be out of question, period.

In my case, if a third team wanted to pay for the Morrii, I'd listen too.

Return to Phoenix Suns
