Backup point guard Tyler Ulis gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason and now “packs” 160 pounds on his 5-foot-10 frame.

“That’s something I worked on during the summer,” Ulis said. “I was in the weight room trying to get bigger.”

Ulis, who averaged 7.3 points, 3.7 assists and 0.79 steals per game last season, said he never doubted his ability to play in the NBA at his size.

“Most people did but I felt like I proved myself at the end of the season,” he said. “I try not to ever question myself. My mom told me that at an early age.”

I like Ulis a lot and if he can become just a decent 3 point shooter (35% or better) he would just be that much better.

He'll always be limited defensively because of his size but I like his scrappiness. He doesn't back down from anyone.

But yeah he already has that + midrange and passing, just need to get his shot expanded a little bit.

Teams got ready for him, got to know his game, his weaknesses from tapes and those games played - and he did not develop anything new.

Ulis is a decent example of rookies getting complacent.

Did not work on his game at all or improve in the off season and comes into his sophomore season worse in every category from his rookie season.

I do not think this is the case. Ulis plays with heart and fights on the court, but he is so small that it makes that fight useless too many times.

I think he is already a solid backup PG in this league, but we are asking him for too much...he is not an starting PG, too much size and talent at that position every night.

He is our last problem as a player/prospect, he was a second round pick...even with his flaws he is outplaying the expectations.

I think he is gonna progress with his strenght and shooting, he is a keeper as a lead bench PG for years to come IMO.

The kid had surgery on his ankle and was in a boot the majority of the offseason, how exactly was he supposed to work on his game and improve while he’s in a boot and can’t play?

At that size he should be more crafty and look to draw offensive fouls.

he was convinced that he can become CP3 or Isaiah Thomas v2.0

so he developed that "me" attitude and focused on getting his stats.... detrimental to his team mates though.

I hate the over dribbling... the demand to open up lanes for him so he can try to score..

Mind you, when he does play unselfishly... he is decent to good.... but selfish... just like Mike James

Over the past three games, he’s averaging 14.7 points and 6.3 assists while shooting 51.3 percent from the field.

“He’s healthy,” Triano said. “He can move better than when he had that back issue. His ability to get in the lane, make two guys play, distribute it if they don’t, score, using screens very well … I thought he changed the game with his defense as well.”

Ulis said he can tell by his movement that he’s healthier than he’s been since the start of the season. But he’s also been more assertive, taking 37 shots over the past three games compared to 33 the previous seven games.

“I understand with Devin and T.J. out I have to be more aggressive than I have been,” Ulis said.

Finding a long-term solution at point guard will be a priority for the Suns over the summer. But they also have to figure out who the backup will be. Ulis has a non-guaranteed contract in 2018-19 so an impressive finish to this season can only help him.

“It’s very important,” he said. “Last year going into the summer I had (ankle) surgery. This year I want to finish off strong and be able to work the entire summer and come back ready.”

So Tyler Ulis is Mirotic? Only performs late in the season?

I surely hope this isn't giving anyone hopes that he's somehow turned the corner.

Sorry. Hopes acquired.

Not a week ago I had assumed we would not be picking up that option. Now I'm on the other side.

Ulis's real worry isn't his own play - it's Shaq's. They both look good. Is there really room for us to add a starting PG, while still retaining Ulis, Shaq and Knight?

Shaq can play the 2 as well, and has looked better than Reed overall, but Reed has also been coming back from injury and could be much improved next season. You also can't get rid of Daniels if you want to win next season.

Keep 'em all, and we have 6 guards - before adding, we expect, a starting PG.

Dicey!

Ulis will look good when we start him and/or play him a lot of minutes with starters. I mean he will put up decent numbers. Did last year. Is this year. As a backup with backup players he struggles. I don't expect anyone really wants him in that starter role.

I think we will keep him but he will still be feasted on my good guards.
