Re: Almost off-season discussion! Trades/Free Agency Ep. 9
Why do people think kawaii "promising" to resign means anything? His promise is worth the paper it's written on, aka nothing since it's not written down.
Kawaii wants the biggest markets, which Phoenix isn't. This is silly.

I swear to god if we deal this pick for 1 year of Kawhi whose is coming off a major, possibly, chronic injury

In order for the Suns to compete with other offers, they would have to offer a package including both Doncic (#1 for Spurs) and Jackson.
And I don’t see them doing that.

Yeah, that would be crazy unless they had a clean physical and had an agreed upon extension with him. That way they could extend him and Book.
But I'd still rather just take Ayton. And I'm sure McD probably would too.
If we traded the #1 pick for him and then lost him in FA next year it would be one of the more brutal blows in Suns history, and we've had some brutal ones.
You’d rather have Ayton than a fully contract extended and medically checked out Kawhi Leonard who is still only 26?

What? You don't think #1,#16, Warren, Bender and a future first is better than Ingram/Kuzma/Hart/25
Edit: I personally dont think we should do it but I think Boston is the only one who can offer more (if we are open to dealing #1)

Sam Amick's sources weren't good enough for Steven A. Smith and Ric Boucher. In other words, those sources are the voices in his head. The Suns are not going to trade the #1 pick for a one year rental in Leonard and are not going to trade out of the #1 pick. I think the Suns season ticket buyers and fans would burn the arena to the ground if the Suns made such a silly trade. Leonard is not signing an extension, it would be major a financial hit for him. Without a signed extension, Leonard is not going to fetch much value in a trade. Certainly, not the # 1 pick in the draft.
That said I would expect McD to make a call to see if he can poach Leonard without giving up Booker, Ayton, or Jackson. He might take a flier on a trade even without a long term commitment, if he does not have to give up everything.

Well, I am kind of sour on Kawhi as a player being the way he handled all this stuff, and I also think building for the long term is the right idea. If I knew he wasn't going to turn into another Derrick Rose or something I'd take Kawhi, because chances are you won't end up with a top 5 or so player regardless of who you pick, and centers are in abundance.
But it's a pipe dream anyway. I don't think Kawhi will want to be in Phx.

Im scared of mcd having 'desperate gm syndrome' here where he deals 1 for Kawhi knowing if he resigns it saves his job for years and if he walks in a year he gets fired and its not his mess to clean up.
Hopefully sarver has more sense than him.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

GM's are not stupid though... most of them.
They're on huge salaries and have qualifications in Business Administration, more specifically for those that are not Ex-players. Basically my point is, they're smart... generally.
But they're risk takers as well, and players and agents tell them information that lead to decisions, but people cannot be trusted... thats the lesson.
So and so can say he will re-sign... but unless there's a written contract its just hearsay

Yeah I would only do it if he was completely medically cleared, risk free health wise and he agrees to extend his contract in Phoenix.
Booker/Kawhi would become a HUGE free agency draw. I would even argue that Booker/Kawhi is a bigger free agency draw than Nash/Amare ever was.

The NBA should veto the trade if #1 is traded and Kawhi doesn’t agree to resign longterm....it would be that bad.

We wouldn't have any cap space. That's the other problem...Ayton is on a rookie deal and we could move pieces to add someone else alongside him and Booker maybe...but we get Kawhi and Booker in here...that's it. Is it enough? We'd have to hope to find a PG in the draft or sign a vet for the MLE or minimum.

He would have to agree to extend at the end of the season. It may not make financial sense for him to extend with any team this summer.
It’s similar to what Kevin Love did when the Cavs traded the #1 overall pick in the ‘14 draft for Love with assurances from Love that he would extend with Cavs after the season.
Suns would require assurances from Kawhi to extend after the season in the same sense.

Wow you'll believe any silly "rumor" to take a shot at McD. We know you don't like him, you don't need to bring it up at every opportunity. The Amick "rumor" is so blatantly stupid and unbelievable that no one with half a brain would give it any credence, but you seem to have. I thought you were better than this.

In a hypothetical scenario where this happens and we get Kawhi for #1, I would assume that we demand the Spurs take on Knight as well (not a big deal since Spurs would start rebuilding and Knight is top 5 tank commander in the league). Then I think we can trade Warren to acquire a late lotto pick plus expiring and use that on a C or a PG.
At the end of the season when Chandler/Dudley expires, we would have a ridiculous amount of cap space in 2019 summer even with Booker/Kawhi contracts on the book. Probably enough for close to two more max deals.
All hypothetical of course.

It's laughable that people think Kawhi Leonard is worth the number one pick in the draft.

I think you'd have to look at it, but I still doubt we'd have max room once you add who's left. Plus, the free agents next year are not great....I think you have like Thompson, Middleton, Bledsoe, Irving, and it seems like mostly 2s in the class.
There is so much Ayton hype and excitement that I would be shocked if McD gave up that pick even for Kawhi.

Nothing legally but it’s pretty rare to see a player verbally agree to extend and then leave. For example, did anyone expect Kevin Love to go anywhere else after his first season? Nope, it was basically assured that he remains there even before the season started.
Only players I can think of that changed minds after verbally agreeing to sign are Carlos Boozer and DeAndre Jordan. Both players took a hit to their reputation off it as well.
I’d say it’s like a 97% chance that players who agree to verbally sign with a team usually sign with that team.
And I don’t think a Booker/Kawhi/Jackson(?) team would suck either. I think it’s a playoff team easily and then with cap space the following summer, they can really improve even more.
