Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
People need to give the guy a break. He's barely played 2 games. Let's see him in a big chunk of games before deciding it's the 'same old' for him this season

You know it’s his own fault that he missed 25 of those games for cheating right?

Yea but people are saying he hasn't improved his handling skills. He probably hasn't but people act like he's played the whole season and is the same Ayton from last season

Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
From Gina Mizell/The Athletic
For days, Ayton has been visibly antsy to return from the injury suffered Dec. 17 at the Clippers — his first game back following the suspension for testing positive for a banned diuretic.
Following Friday’s shootaround at Golden State, Ayton proclaimed his readiness as he bounced around while wearing sandals. Then after being ruled out for the Portland game on Sunday’s official injury report, Ayton, according to Williams, fully participated in Monday morning’s shootaround and had recently progressed “immensely.” Later that day, Ayton was cleared to play on a minutes restriction.
“I wouldn’t say it was frustrating,” Ayton said of the additional missed time. “I sat back and said, ‘You know what, there’s just some times where you say, OK, Deandre, you’re gonna be one of those guys who (is) gonna have to mature faster (when) life hits you.’
“It made me want to appreciate everything around me, and shows me that (basketball) can be taken away from you at any time. I just sat back and got humbled. Now, I’m just playing.”
.....
Rubio said he will use film study to identify all the new playmaking options available with Ayton on the floor. Portland coach Terry Stotts even acknowledged before the game that Ayton is “completely different” from the Suns’ other big men, and his availability would change how the Trail Blazers approached both ends of the floor.

Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
The difference between him and Baynes or Kaminsky is huge on the defensive end.
I cant find a tweet i saw about Baynes oponents % around the rim on December, it was super high, 60% something.

That's what my eyes tell me as well. But you know you can't say much negative bout Baynes round here. This Baynes country, fella. Don't you know he's so "tough" and "smart" that it makes up for his lack of height and athleticism? Don't you know that the only reason he doesn't get rebounds is because he's so busily earning them for others (except they all suck at rebounding, which is why we're a poor rebounding team with him out there anyway)?

Oh, the passive aggressive approach. Ayton can be a nice deterrent around the basket, however, in the past he would often watch his guy go by and he had one of the worst DFG% around the rim last year among centers. He has looked better this year in his extremely small sample size in that regard. But I expect Ayton to be a much better rebounder, rim protector, ability to switch with quickness, finishing etc. Baynes is simply good at different things. The screen setting is night and day betwen the two, as is getting in front of driving guys to take a charge, talking on defense and making sure the team is picking things up, passing, stretching the floor with the 3 pt shooting, etc. Ayton makes a bigger difference, but I sure as hell hope so as a first pick and the starter.
Baynes simply lacks the athleticism that Ayton has but there is a reason he is highly coveted around the league and plays for his national team. He makes up for it by playing the right way and all the things I mentioned above.
Talking high about Baynes in regards to Zubac and his long term salary had nothing to do with Ayton anyway.

I've certainly seen Baynes *attempt* to take a lot of charges, but they pretty much always count as personal fouls in the box score.
"In the past" is a nice way to say "before this season." Small sample size I know, but I've seen Ayton going up for blocks 4/4 games this year. The screen setting is NO LONGER night and day.
I know you watch the games but maybe your eyesight is about as photographic as your memory.
The rest of this post is in your PM as I am not interested in showing my ass on your forum.

Ayton's screen setting is still pretty weak. Baynes is a great screen setter. Ayton has done better with blocks but sometimes still can have the tendency to watch. But he has gotten a lot better, and will continue to do so. The first game of the season I thought Ayton looked great on defense.
I just don't understand piling on Baynes in this thread, and don't see a PM either. He's 5th in the NBA in charges drawn. https://stats.nba.com/players/hustle/?sort=CHARGES_DRAWN&dir=1

Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
Monty Williams talks about Ayton’s lack of aggression and specifically challenging him to dunk more. I’m glad he said it because it’s something I don’t understand either as a dunk is obviously a higher percentage shot (unless Josh Jackson is doing it) and he has a chance to get and-1 plus get the crowd into it or crowd out of it (if it’s an away game).

Really good listen, Monty talks about many other things too. Full audio is in the link above.

Ayton really is improved on defense so far. His length and quick feet bothered the knicks all night.

He looks like a man to man defensive nightmare for opposing wings and bigs at times. There were several moments in that Knicks game where Randle and Portis couldn't do anything to him and could only pass back to a guard.
