Horford literally just signed in Boston, they're not going to trade him.

Maybe we can just ignore it and hope the league doesn't notice.

Excellent post LGSletsgosuns wrote:Idk why so many people are proposing wild trade scenarios. What is going on? Let's review the offseason.
The Suns draft Bender, Chriss, and Ulis. The moves are praised by the media and some proclaimed the Suns won the draft. Fans are excited and optimism about the franchise returns. A week later free agency starts and ridiculously bad contracts are handed out across the league. The Suns do not take part and instead sign Dudley to a reasonable contract. Two players that do not matter much to the Suns, Teletovich and Leuer, leave for other teams. Again fans are happy the Suns preserve cap space and do not give out any massive contracts.
Now for some reason I see people mentioning these crazy ideas. Let's trade Bender, Bledsoe, and picks for Westbrook. Let's dismantle the team for Cousins. Why didn't the Suns try to sign Wade. Stars attract stars. What the hell happened? Are some of you guys completely losing your minds? Outside of signing Durant, the Suns offseason draft picks and free agent acquisitions could not have been more successful. They needed young power forwards. They got them. They needed veteran presences to mentor the young players. They got them. This franchise is on the way up. Outside of championship contenders, I think there are probably several teams that would love to trade places with the Suns right now. Yet some of you want to tear it all down. And for what? Some joke of a quick fix that ruins the future of the team. I do not get it. Suddenly some people on here have become very impatient.

Totally agree. And if you look at the other young teams that are looking to rise up 4-5 years from now (Wolves, Lakers, Boston, Bucks, and....Sixers I guess?) I definitely think we have a far better veteran presence on the roster (Chandler, Dudley, Leandro, and Bled even though he's still young) to help teach our young talent. And after hearing him on the radio, I'm thrilled with Watson as our HC. I just hope Sarver is bought into this longer term process and doesn't force the issue if Cousins/Westbrook/Griffin/etc become available.

Re: The 2016 Offseason Thread
The Watson interview on Doug and Wolf was better than I thought it would be, there was some good insight on the team, his expectations of the young guys and how they plan to develop them, his coaching staff, their roles, and how he wants to put together the most talented coaching staff around him that he can as a new coach, and a lot of other good stuff. Booker seems to be trying to adapt the role of a leader for our young team and expanding his game, it was pretty funny to hear that Booker wants at least 6 touches in the post a game during Summer League lol, and Watson says he'll only probably get 2 games in during Summer League. Watson also said he wants to send young guys up to Northern Arizona to play in D-League games as well when we have long enough breaks between games and the NAS play. If anyone that can't listen wants to know more details, then I'd be happy to break it down a bit, but I definitely recommend giving it a listen if you have a half hour of free time.

The key here is staying on the path and don't get tempted into jumping on get better quick opportunities. If it makes sense, then go for it. While guys like Cousins, Westbrook and whoever else comes up might be tempting, it also has to make sense from a fit, chemistry and sustainability sense. I really do hope we make a genuine effort to rebuild, not just a rebuild in name and reload in practice.

What I don't understand I how Dudley has not gotten more time as a 'stretch 4' type through the years, or played more in a starting role. Is it due to his T-Rex arms (6'7" wingspan on a 6'7.25" height Forward is pretty bad...along with his 8'6" Standing Reach)?
He did start for us quite a bit in the '11-'12 and '12-'13 seasons, but other than those two seasons, he's largely been a back-up. But with a career .399 3PT%, excellent career A/TO (1.7 career)and PPR numbers (.5) for a non-PG, and while not a direct correlation, those numbers are often found with guys with high BBIQs. His lowest TS% of .48 was with the Bobcats his first 1 and a quarter years. The same with his eFG% of .51. But outside of those numbers, they typically hovered around .58 and .57 respectively.
It also appears we was rarely a "1st option" for a team as a scorer, even though his numbers dictate that they might should have been.
Anyway, glad he's back, especially considering that he had one of his best years in the league last year.
He's not as much of a plus on defense at the 4 as you might think, is probably the biggest reason. And he really doesn't do a whole lot on the boards. While his offensive game is a nice fit as a modern 4, there's a reason the Wizards went from being a good defensive team to a pretty mediocre one when they started going with small ball 4s who don't necessarily excel on defense.
My bolded question above you pretty much answered, but I never felt he was a 'plus' defender at all, which is why I presumed his short arms were likely his reason for coming off the bench more than starting...thus being a relatively poor defender.

Yeah we really don't have any prototypical long athletic two way wings on this roster. That needs to change soon or we're going nowhere. The Junkyard Dog maybe a beloved community presence but he is no Tony Allen,

I wouldn't want Sanders. I think he'll be a negative influence for our younger guys and likely more trouble than he's worth.

I had no idea he was making a come back. I hope some team gives him a chance if his anxiety & depression are under control. He was Whiteside before Whiteside. (Funny enough they are the same age.)

One thing he said in that interview that really stood out to me was that their personnel decisions (i.e. the Dudley and Leandro pick-ups) aren't about basketball ability, it's about the type of people they are. He also referenced how important it is to have older players who know what it means to win in a Suns uniform specifically. It wasn't long ago that both Leandro and Dudley were 1-2 wins away from getting us to the Finals.
Translating that to real life, it matters so much more to be guided by someone who has been successful in your job and on your team. Being successful elsewhere just doesn't have the same impact.
