He's a better option than Pau, Bosh, or Kieff, IMO. If we did take Monroe, JDLAW made it clear to me that we would need to be careful to keep enough shooters on our roster to space the floor. So far, it looks like I'm in a minority of one on this issue, but Kevin Love and Al Horford ain't walking through those door.
How come everyone's so down with Pau but not Monroe? What does he provide that Greg doesn't? I don't get it.
My reasoning as to why I'd rather have Pau than Monroe.
Pau has a proven track record of being a consistent threat in the paint, offensively this guy can score pretty much at will. He has a high basketball IQ, and he's a proven winner. Him complaining to me, is just telling the media he dislikes losing and wants his team to be better. His mid-range shot is consistent enough to open up the floor for our guards to drive to the paint. He doesn't have to be a phenomenal defender to play defense, his length alone bothers players, he's a giant tower in the paint. Pau doesn't rely on his athleticism to play the game of basketball, which is why he can still have a career at 33 or however old he is, and with our medical staff, he should be good to go for the next three to four years before Alex Len takes over as the beast in the middle. His veteran leadership should help as well, not to mention the impact he can have on Len/Plumlee's development.
Greg Monroe could just be playing for a contract. He isn't an enforcer on defense, and he doesn't even command respect defensively. Our front court defensively would get thrown around in the playoffs. He would fit our system, but what happens when our shots aren't falling? He doesn't have the versatility to score at will, and his offense is very limited.
I think a lot of us on the board are thinking too long term, and just see Greg Monroe as a younger player, but I don't see him having a long career after this upcoming contract expires. His game doesn't translate well to when he gets older IMO. I think 3-4 years of Pau would be far better than 3-4 years of Greg Monroe.
