That was a surprise as I thought this was all going according to what the FO planned.

Must be a Sarver move with attractiveness of product.

What is an assistant really going to do differently, seems like a move just to make a move.

For anyone curious, Jay Triano can build an aesthetically-pleasing offense, and then ensure it doesn't win by surrendering 130 points. The '09/'10 Raptors had the fifth-best offense in the NBA, but missed the playoffs thanks to the tenth-worst DRTG of all time. Great option if tanking.

I hope I'm not wrong but Triano is really just an interim solution until we find someone else. Either way, Watson had to go. We were ill-prepared from the 1st game and it never got any better. Our players weren't utilised correctly and our veteran 'leader' already looked checked out about 10min's into the 1st game.

He is probably the best free agent coach out there on the market. I read an article not long ago and I think it was Jeff Van Gundy said he had done the best coaching job ever in one season somewhere and it talked about how he was one of the best basketball minds. He's a defensive guy too. Loves the full court press and pressure. Would love JJ.

One would assume the Suns are a team a perspective head coach would dream about, There is a lot of talent to work with plus potentially two first round players on the horizon.

I know Pitino has some questionable character issues but I'd actually love it.

Will the interim get fired if we lose by 40+ again?

You know, Pitino is actually a really good idea that i didnt even think of!

He LOVES coaching, and after the scandal he will have a hard time getting another College coaching gig. He is used to teaching/coaching the younger guys, so that experience is a plus.

He is a bit of an innovator when it comes to the systems he runs.
Spoiler:
https://www.cardchronicle.com/2012/1/18/2716711/pitinos-defensive-system

Who can forget (Probably a lot of people) when he tore into Boston fans and their expectations back when he was the Celtics coach.
Spoiler:
Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old. What we are is young, exciting, hard-working, and we're going to improve. People don't realize that, and as soon as they realize those three guys are not coming through that door, the better this town will be for all of us because there are young guys in that (locker) room playing their asses off. I wish we had $90 million under the salary cap. I wish we could buy the world. We can't; the only thing we can do is work hard, and all the negativity that's in this town sucks. I've been around when Jim Rice was booed. I've been around when Yastrzemski was booed. And it stinks. It makes the greatest town, greatest city in the world, lousy. The only thing that will turn this around is being upbeat and positive like we are in that locker room... and if you think I'm going to succumb to negativity, you're wrong. You've got the wrong guy leading this team.

I think Pitino is actually a really good idea to help with the development of EVERYTHING Suns related. Our Identity, Our System, Our youngsters, our EVERYTHING!

I mean i still think that Messina is a really good idea and i had him placed 2 tiers above all other names, but i have to now put Pitino right up there at the top with him!

Well, we won't be good on defense regardless, because we don't have good defensive players outside of a couple of guys that are decent. I see a lot of Raps fans talking about how terrible he is but he didn't seem to do any worse than MItchell (not that that is a positive endorsement) but the team just didn't have a lot of talent outside of Bosh. And then when Bosh left, they understandably were awful. They had DeRozan in his second year, Bargnani, Calderon and not much else.

Interesting though, that he took over as interim and then got a three year extension in the offseason and then got let go before the end of those three years, so he's been on the other side of this.

He's at least had 4-5 years of an assistant with the Blazers under Stotts and is head coach of team Canada.

So he has a bit more experience. Hopefully he holds players accountable and is better with rotations. It would be nice if his interim tag was only 15 games or so but that's unlikely.

He is a smart basketball mind. Pitino's coaching tree includes Jeff Van Gundy, Billy Donovan and Frank Vogel, all past assistants for him.

I think there is pretty much zero chance we hire him or even think about hiring him though.

The 3rd year was a team option and they decided not to pick it up.

I know, that's why I wrote it like that instead of saying he got fired.

No to pitino. Just ride this interim situation out and do a real coaching search this spring. Its crazy to me they would let McD hire another coach so thats another decision they need to make after the season.

Someone needs to paste McDs face on the "this is fine" meme.

Is there a coach out there that plays uptempo offense and also focuses on defense?

Created a new thread to discuss potential Head Coach candidates

https://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1627232

This thread should be for reactions and discussion of the Watson firing.

Would have loved it if the FO had fired the entire coaching staff...well? Watson, Triano and Corbin....Then named Jared Dudley & James Jones as co-interim head coaches for the rest of '17-'18 ...trying something wildly different (why the **** not?) ...knowing (almost for sure) an entirely new staff will be coming in after the season...WTF!

...But! We all know what is going to happen instead- Triano/Corbin will pull the **** out of the fire...they'll get back some respectability...win 24-28 games...and then Triano will get named permanent HC (he's HC material for cheap) ...or worse, they'll do a PR/sales hire and bring in Majerle or Nash. ...meh

the team needs a proven HC talent, especially at this low point!
