Patty Mills plays like Damian Lillard for Australia for 10 years.
Patty Mills is also a good NBA player. Olympics might have been the showcase Yabu needed to get more eyeballs on his game so he could get back into the NBA but he's been a really good starter playing for a Euro powerhouse in Real Madrid in the top league in Europe for the past 3 seasons.
He is also like 6'8" 270 lbs who can do a bit of defending at SF and C. We could have used a guy like that. It's PJ Tucker all over again.
My feeling as well - he is just more athletic than PJ ever was. You havent seen him going up and yank it on anyone like that. Even if his 3s dont translate that well (why wouldn't they from the corner they are the same), he can be a very effective smallball5 and lob threath after a PnR or sliping on a backdoor from the corner or when he just hangs around in the dunker spot...
Not sure who said Caleb Martin being rock solid - no real argument there, but that dude is a tweener between sg and sf, he is 6'5 on a good day (read: he is 6'4 at best). Fully different skillset/type, etc... apples and oranges

Probably worth a mention that while Yabu has been a good starter for a really good European team, PJ was a champion/MVP in the German league. I don't really know how to quantify that and compare it to Yabu but thought it was just worth pointing out that PJ was balling over there. European basketball connoisseurs might be better placed to comment on this.
All that being said, I absolutely thought a guy of Yabu's profile would've been pretty damn useful on a team that doesn't have a ton of size of the wings.

That was me.
Caleb Martin for the last 3 years has been playing most of his minutes at SF and he has played some at SG and PF too. He is a super aggressive player that loves to play physical and is a very good all-around defender. He plays bigger than his size.
Yabusele is much bigger but with Caleb Martin playing a bunch of minutes at SF Paul George is gonna play (on theory) most of his minutes as a PF in the Sixers and that's why Caleb will affect Yabusele's minutes.

Not including Caitland Clark on the Women's Olympic Team was criminal.
Diana Taurasi was a bench warmer at 42 and wants to play on the team in 2028 WTF.
The WNMBA just plain fooked up

German league MVP is nice, but Yabusele still plays on a lot better team against better competition in top EU league that is EL in addition to Spain league. He can very well be another PJ, but nothing is guaranteed. A lot of teams probably wanted him, I guess Suns too. I'd have been happy with him, but can't have them all after Jones steal, I guess.

Doing it on a big stage and playing well against NBA players will get you another look. It might have been a flash in the pan, but he could stick if he does the dirty work like he was for France and shoots a reasonable percentage from 3. I think a flier on him would have been worth more than paying Damien Lee to be our 7th guard off the bench.

That's it
When opportunity knocks and he shows out, that's how you get back on the radar. NBA teams only have so many resources and even the most well resourced ones may only have 1-2 part time European scouts and that's multiple leagues with multiple teams with dozen plus players to scout.
On the topic of D.Lee, I think we're largely keeping him on the roster because he's a good team guy, he's good friends with KD and he's a good shooter. I don't think we'd have an issue cutting him if a player worth signing and wants to sign with the Suns is available.

Re: The Official 2024 Offseason Thread Part 2
When he decided to sign with the Phoenix Suns, Tyus Jones took less money than was offered elsewhere. Jones ultimately decided that the opportunity to start for a contender was worth more than cashing in as a free agent.
The New York Knicks had made Jones a two-year, $10 million offer. He also had at least one other offer that was far larger than the Knicks proposal. Jones and his former team, the Washington Wizards, had also discussed sign-and-trade scenarios. The veteran point guard and the Wizards also had conversations about him signing a deal and being traded by the 2025 trade deadline. All of these scenarios would have seen Jones making more than the veteran minimum contract he has with Phoenix.
Jones is expected to start for the Suns, who are retooling after starting much of last season without a traditional point guard. Phoenix is expected to start Jones alongside Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal and Jusuf Nurkic.

Barely.
Taurasi averaged 1pt per game in this tournament, 0pt in 3 of the 5 games on 16%FG, had more fouls and turnovers than points, she had no business being there let alone starting.
Chelsea Gray also worth a mention, she was clearly limping. Why is she selected? She barely played this season and was rushed back to the Olympics. 1.6pts per game on 17%FG. Jewell Loyd another guard average 3.2pt on 23%FG
That's 3 guards that shouldn't be on the team and played terribly
Clark is the point guard they needed

The 2005-06 Suns will always have a special place in my heart

He won't be starting for the Knicks, and I don't think Thibodeau would play him ahead of even McBride for example because of his defense or lack there of.

Not sure who that other team is that would've given him a far larger deal than the Knicks offer but he sure is leaving a lot of money on the table. Really wonder who that other team would've been

Gambo (for what that's worth) indicated that Atlanta and Memphis were in with offers. Memphis, in particular, had the ability to access the NTMLE if they wanted.
