As long as he doesn't lose the room he'll be fine for at least two more years. Players may get sick of the love and yoga.

This the kind of stuff that really irritates me. What indication has been given that he has the "room". That is the problem. He doesn't have the room or he really has no idea how to coach.
My opinion is that if you have the "Room" people follow your lead. If they are following his lead, he is even worse than what I am suggesting.

Earl Watson aka John Wooden yoga master
Here's your problem: kids love yoga. They think they're being empowered and stuff when in reality you're not learning any fundamentals and just agreeing with the snake oil salesman.
But alas, as with any unproven young coach, time is on their side. It's as if there's this expectation that overnight Earl's going to flick a switch and become a prodigious head coach.
The reality is, the only other team that has put this much young talent into major roles in the NBA is the early-process Sixers. And they did it with a 50-something year old coach that had paid his dues coaching for 20 odd years. He drilled the fundamentals into that team at a very very early stage. They produced RoCo and McConnell out of that.
We have a coach who seems a bit bemused by the idea of disciplining bad habits- defensive effort is optional, talking trash is fine and making the extra pass is foreign concept. Again, look at that early-process Sixers team... they went 18-64 in 14'-15' but were 4th in passes per game. They knew that despite not yet having the talent to be a good team, they'd still play like they were a good team - do the team things well and let the talent develop at its own rate.
Here, Earl seems to think you can get away with doing the opposite. Do all the things that will "help" you develop: jack 3s, do what you like, defend when you feel like it... and then the team concepts will come later? It won't work.
The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Great post my man.

Coach Watson has to go
NOTE: This was merged by mod from a different thread
Opening night is a coaching failure.
I do not want to teach this great young core how to play garbage iso ball.
I definitely do not want a coach who cannot prepare his team on opening night at home to lose by less than 30.
We haven't had an actual head coach since we fired Gentry, and honestly I wasn't really sold on him as a HC either.
We need one of those old, experienced, COACHES. Not some random former player who has NEVER been a head coach in his entire life! I don't care what kind of basketball IQ he had as an individual player.
Playing basketball is not the same thing as coaching it.
Find a real coach and fire Watson asap, is my new position.
I don't mind building up young rookie players. But let coaches learn how to coach on their own time.

Re: Coach Watson has to go
To be fair, if I remember correctly, last time this happened they came back and looked much better in game 2 and I felt stupid for whining. And, I have barely actually watched any of the game today. But from what I've seen, it looks really bad and disorganized.
I will hope it is just first night jitters by the young team. But they seem completely unprepared.

Really have to ask yourself this question: what has Watson REALLY done in the time he's been our coach?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but this coach is just garbage. Quite possibly the worst coach in NBA history.
That is my opinion.

Same old nonsense. How many more years does this guy get prior to us judging him. If you listen to him it is not about winning it is about development.
What development have you seen.

I hope you're trolling...
Aside from this game (which I'm hoping to forget) what has he really done in his time here to warrant MORE time with us?

Well, everyone is saying to fire Watson. I don’t think that’s fair when we just ended the FIRST game of the season. I was pissed watching the game. We damn near lost by 50 points. I get it. I would say within 15 games, if it’s time to look elsewhere. Let’s see how we respond before we say to fire a guy.

Agreed. He is a good coach, or trainer. Just not a Head Coach. Totally different job.
bgwood77 wrote:Sure, that last game was a disaster on all levels, but it's one game, and it happens.
Make that two games. And the second one was opening night, at home.

When are they going to start competing?
Earl Watson wrote:I watched at least 10 Suns game last year on League Pass. I saw them develop into competitive team. They showed absolutely zero respect for my Spurs, which is EXACTLY the way to compete. Their ruthless style of play reminded me of the Bad Boys of the 90s. What they did to Porzingus at home last year made me smile despite how brutally the Suns treated him. I was greatly impressed with the team unity. Earl Watson got Tucker, Chriss and Booker playing well beyond their years. Watson's the real deal.
The OP apparently has front row seats. The only way that he (the OP) could be so confused about Watson is if he were a racist. Seriously. How many threads do we see with the subject "<Name of Black Coach> sucks...when will we fire him?" Or here's another perennial joke thread -- "List the coaches that should be canned this year" -- where the consensus top 3 coaches are black.
Watson is a fine young coach. If you don't like him, just say so. That's fine. But don't come off like a dolt arguing that he sucks. If the Suns fire Watson, I'd like to think that Pop would hire him in an instant.

We looked equally as trash in preseason as well. Just throwing that out there.

I wanted a proper coach with appropriate experience before he was promoted from interim to full HC. McD/Sarver were doing themselves a disservice last season when they continually restated their support for Watson as HC despite showing little to no improvement in his coaching as the season went on.
As far as I'm concerned, this could be game 41 or game 82 of last season or game 1 of this season, I've seen enough of this guy.

I said the same exact thing about Jeff Hornacek, who I believe is mostly not black, after a season-opening bomb against Dallas.

Yes it was one game. But I think a season opening home game should never be a blowout like this, with any nba level players. Even if the worst team in the league. this was much more than a loss. It was more than a blowout. They clowned us, at home, season opener

EDIT: and we only lost that game by like 20. We lost this one by almost 50. Go outside and shoot jump shots from anywhere you want on the floor until you make 25 of them, for perspective.
I'm done whining for the evening, but I appreciate the support group.

I don't care if he is black blue white or green. His team was totally unprepared to play. I might wait one more game to fire him but it would be coming unless something dramatic changes.
In fact, he ought to quit before he gets fired. He is delusional to think he is a legit NBA coach.
Might as well cut Tyson Chandler too. It would at least leave a little more oxygen in the bench area and a little more Gatorade for someone else to drink. As an example he is a detriment.
I hope you read this Tyson.
