Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
Ayton has the desire we'll have to see how he pans out, the talking heads are now praising Doncic but who knows.
I just hope we don't end up with a Sam Bowie type situation.

Great potential rivalry, this is going to be similar to Hakeem vs Shaq in the 90s for who's the king of centers.
Joel Embiid = Hakeem, the 2way player with elite post moves that's also elite defender
DeAndre Ayton = Shaq, rare physical talent whos a special offensive player. Ayton athleticism is underrated. No one that big should move as swiftly as Ayton does.
Joel Embiid vs DeAndee Ayton! Future headline potential NBA Finals

Bowie was never going to be MJ or Hakeem caliber but Portland would’ve won titles had he not been injury prone. I just don’t get how they pass on those two for a big that had well known physical problems BEFORE the draft.
As for Oden he was relatively healthy in college except for a hand injury. That’s why I never rag on them too much for passing on Durant.
I know that wasn’t your point when bringing up Bowie but that pick always blows me way.

If you go back and read the stories at the time, the Bulls were trying to trade their pick for a big as well. I think that pick was nearly traded.

Totally agree. I don't think there's any question Oden was the right pick at the time. Even in limited minutes, he was dominant as a young player. He came in at a time when giant bigs can still be the best player in the league and that Roy/LMA/Oden trio was one of the most exciting young cores coming up. Sucks to see what happened to Oden and Roy with injuries but it was hella entertaining at the time.

Bowie was a talent. He was better then Ralph Sampson when Sampson could play. He was a 7'2 who could move. He just never could stay healthy.

Come on, man!
Bowie was good. Really a big man who could play, with a nice shot and soft touch with post moves.
But Sampson was something different.
7-3/7-4 with a narrow frame, long arms, who could dribble and could pass, shoot, run the floor, post and face up.

Re: WELCOME DEANDRE AYTON!!!!
Most folks talking about Sam Bowie as a bust are talking out of their backside. Know the history on *why* the guy's legs seemed to be made of glass and why he was drafted as late as 1984. Watch some of his college footage and them hire a crane to lift your jaws off the floor.
If he were playing today (and healthy), some over-aged hipster would be calling Bowie a "unicorn". Check the doc "Going Big" :

Nice find Swing
I went to that 1980 Olympian/All Star game at the Mad House. Not much of a game... pros rolled over. Still have the souvy TeeShirt... somewhere. Bowie gets the bum rap for sure. Sad 'what if' story and a well done documentary.
That was a good year for valley basketball. ASU hosted a regional ncaa bracket with Ohio St, UCLA, and Depaul... a lot of pro talent from those four, including suns Mike Sanders and Rod Foster. Also Mark Aguire and Kiki. Devils had four that went pro... Lister (on the olympic team as well) Nimphius, Byron Scott and Fat Lever. Guess Ned could recruit but but but..... of course the Suns got bounced by the fLakeShow 4-1 in the semi finals. Great era for hoops, college and pro.
Then came the rest of the 80s......

Ayton has to be the most least talked about #1 pick

He's a Sun. It's to be expected. We need some wins to reverse this nonsense.

And I think this is great for him. More quiet for him and less pressure.

You think if Doncic was a Sun there would be no talk about him?

I think it would certainly be muted relative to what it is.... but you're right; the noise would probably be louder than it currently is for Ayton. Could be an anti-big bias. I don't recall a whole lot of excitement about KAT relative to, say, Wiggins.

I think it mostly depends on whether someone is considered a clear cut #1 pick. Towns was by the time the draft came, but guys like AD and Simmons has hype and were clear cut #1s and Wiggins had hype for years.
Being that many thought this draft was loaded at the top, no one is getting a ton of hype right now except a little for Doncic, but that's been going on for a couple of years so it's not surprising. Many of the prospects in this draft class are very divisive. Bridges is probably about the least divisive.

Damn you're right. I don't think Fultz got much fanfare either though IIRC
