I think much defensive criticism comes from people who want to sound like they know basketball, or those who do not watch but only read stat sheets.

So if anyone criticises his defense, they either don't see what you see or want to sound like they know basketball or they only look at the stat sheets?

Not all criticism. I just see a lot of "his defense stinks" comments on message boards where I suspect there is no real understanding.

TJ has to be a frontrunner for MIP this year provided he stays healthy, he honestly has been the best player on the floor for us so far. I knew he was a baller, but he's even exceeding my high expectations for him this year.

TJ's defence has impressed me more than his O to start the season.

Hes a completely different player on the defensive side of the ball

Discussion last year on the draft / trade thread and I still think Wiggins isn't better than Warren.

Mulhollanddrive wrote:Warren better @ 2pt FG%, 3pt FG%, FT%, Rebounds per 36, O Rebounds per 36, Less Turnovers, O-Rating, D-Rating, TS%, Win Shares.

Wiggins better @ points per 36 (+3 points), D Rebounds per 36 (+0.2), blocks per 36 (+0.3).

Wiggins may be a slightly better prospect because he has age on his side and his reputation has in built potential and expectation of no.1 pick, but take that away, and it is close and you could argue he's even not better than Warren.

DTB is a very funny person:

ATTENTION: The "T.J. Warren Hype Alert Level" has been UPGRADED from "orange - high: high risk of T.J. Warren hype" to "red - I am hyped for T.J. Warren RIGHT NOW". Please reference the official chart:
Image

To repeat: T.J. Warren hype levels are at RED, the highest levels of T.J. Warren hype that are possible. This is not a drill. Take shelter immediately. Repeat: THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

Is anybody genuinely surprised at Warren's torrid start though? We already knew he could do this. That being said though, it certainly doesn't change my hype level, which is really high at the moment. But I'm sure when most of you guys are checking the box scores you're not thinking "oh my god" but rather, "yeah great stuff".

Come to think of it, I was more shocked by Len's line tonight.

Warren is defending better than I expected. He still doesn't play aggressive position defense as consistently as I would like but there are lots of deflections and perkiness.

The biggest adjustment the coaching staff made was to have him body up on his man. He doesn't have the quickest feet, but he uses his body well, and staying close allows him to use his dangerous hands much more often. It's strange but true that players have a much harder time getting by him the closer he is to them - basically, his body slows his man down enough that his relatively slow feet are much less of an issue. It's made a huge difference.

I'm gonna beat myself up the entire year now because I had the option of picking up Warren and dropping Chandler Parsons after the Thunder game. Someone else took him immediately. I thought he could score 20 a game, but I didn't think he was going to get boards/steals/blocks. He is playing at an all-star level right now.

TJ is seriously our best player. He's a joy to watch. Every game it seems like he shows off different moves. Yes, the backdoor cuts and second chance points are his bread and butter, but he is constantly showing the ability to score in creative ways from any point on the floor.

Booker and TJ are the bright spots of our team. Both have allstar potential. Best of all, both don't need the ball to score.

His mid range game is super wet (particularly up top between the FT line and the 3pt line).

A true joy to watch...

Not quite over a year ago, but very close. It's too bad he broke his foot just before Watson took over. Breaking his foot helps his MIP chances.
